Geraldine R. Bak, 74

Holden - Geraldine R. (Mann) Bak, 74, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at UMass Memorial Medical Center – University Campus on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 after a brief battle with ALS. Her loving husband of 43 years, Bruce S. Bak preceded her in 2011.

She leaves her son, S. Peter G. Bak and his wife, Sarah Wright, of Lunenburg; her two daughters, Katherine R. Connor and her husband, Philip, of Holden and Julia B. Patnode and her husband, Thomas, of Overland Park, Kansas; her brother, Edward Mann of Conway; her seven grandchildren, Erin, Andrew, and Kerry Connor, Jonathan, Joseph, Caroline, and Hannah Patnode; and several nieces and nephews.

Geraldine was born and raised in Northampton, the daughter of Edward and Ruth (Driscoll) Mann and graduated from the former St. Michael's High School in Northampton, class of 1960. She went on to further her education by earning her Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Anna Maria College in 1964. Before she and Bruce started their family, she began her career as an educator in Springfield, Holyoke, and Burlington, Vermont. After moving to Holden in 1982, she shared her love of learning with her students at the Dawson Elementary School where she was a beloved teacher from 1986 until her retirement in 2006. Many students still recall her special way to start each day, "Good morning class, I love you."

Geraldine's life was centered on faith and family. She was an active member of St. George's Church, where she served as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and a dedicated member of the Parish Council. She served on the Board of Trustees for the Gale Free Library and attended the W.I.S.E. program at Assumption College. She was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting and attending Holy Cross Basketball games.
