John Hackenberg Obituary
John was a veteran who served in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam war. He graduated from UMass Lowell with a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering and worked for Digital Equipment Corp. for over 25 years.

I worked with John for over 10 years at DEC. He was a joy to work with and I always appreciated his humor during difficult times. My sincerest condolences to his family. I will miss him.

I worked with and for John for several years at DEC on the Vax 9000. John was a great manager and person. I am truly grieved by his passing.

I met John in 1984 in the Technology group in High Performance Systems. He was always encouraging and helpful. I learned key things from him that became instrumental in my career, but the lessons about empathy that I took from our relationship have been important in my life. He was truly a great man.

I worked at DEC as a freshly-minted engineer right out of college. I was originally intimidated by John because he was so smart, and so focused, and asked such hard (to me) questions, that I thought I'd never live up to his standard. But then as I got to know him, I realized John had a wonderful, dry sense of humor and was really interested in other people. He was a great guy to look up to, and I'm sorry for your family's loss.

John Hackenberg was one of the first members of the "Large Systems Engineering Group" that I met back in '73 when I showed up. I worked closely with him for most of the next 11 years. He was the nicest and most professional man ever. He taught me more than most professors.
