Lucien E. "Lou" Fontaine, 76

Sturbridge - Lucien E. "Lou" Fontaine, 76, passed away on Wednesday, June 28th, in his home, surrounded by his family after a long battle with lung cancer.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Constance R. (Tremblay) Fontaine; his daughter, Nicole M. Cunningham and her husband, Dolbert F. Cunningham of Sturbridge; his brother, Paul A. Fontaine and his wife, Marie of Sturbridge; his nieces Brenda A. Renneisen and Denise P. Fontaine of Bloomington, IN; his grand-nephew, Andrew Earnest of Bloomington, IN; and his grand-niece, Jaime Lesage of Daytona, FL; and several other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Sydney Cunningham, his grand-nephew, Norman Lesage. Born in Southbridge on October 19, 1940, Lucien was the beloved son of Therese (Pelletier) Fontaine and Lucien Fontaine. Lucien graduated from Assumption Preparatory School in Worcester, MA in 1959.

He retired from Alsco Industries as a quality assurance manager in 2006 where he had worked for 10 years. He previously worked for the American Optical Co. and the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Lucien and his brother Paul, owned and operated Frenchy's Restaurant on Hamilton Street in Southbridge from 1981 to 1991. Lucien and his wife Connie also operated Frenchy's on the Slope, a winter concession business at the Blandford Ski Area in Blandford, MA from 1982 to 2002.

Lucien was known for his gift of gab. He enjoyed playing the organ, masonry work, woodworking, spending time with his family and friends and during his retirement years, genealogy. Proud of his French-Canadian ancestry, Lucien and his wife frequented Quebec, Canada on a regular basis. He was a member of L'Association des Familles Tremblay and L'Association des Familles Pelletier.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of VNA Care Hospice and Palliative Care for the wonderful care that was provided to Lucien.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, July 1st, from the Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., Southbridge, with a Mass at 12:00pm in St. Mary's Church of the St. John Paul II Parish, 263 Hamilton St., Southbridge. Burial in St. George Cemetery, Southbridge, will be held at the convenience of the family. Calling hours in the funeral home will be held on Friday, June 30th, from 4:00 to 7:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be made in Lucien's name to the St. John Paul II Parish Building Fund, 279 Hamilton St., Southbridge, MA 01550.
