Sarah Garber Obituary
Sarah E. Garber

MARIETTA, GA - Sarah Ellen Roper Garber, formerly a resident of Lancaster died on May 2, 2018. Born in Roodhouse, Illinois on May 10, 1925 she was daughter to Willard and Goldie Bernice Roper. Her father worked for the railroad and Sarah held many fond memories of train travel and adventures.

Sarah flourished in school, skipping a grade and went on to Monmouth College where she met Kenneth S. Garber of Clinton, who was serving in the Navy Air Corp that housed its servicemen on the college campus. In wartime, Sarah worked for Allis-Chalmers doing research on metal plating for armored vehicles.

Sarah and Ken married in 1946 and returned to Clinton where she worked for the Surprenant Cable Corporation as a chemist doing research helping to make the first plastics. Together they bought a house in Lancaster where she raised four children. When her youngest was in school, Sarah completed her teaching degree at Atlantic Union College and taught at the Lancaster Middle School for over 25 years. She cherished the excitement of her students learning about their world and made a lasting impression with many of them.

Sarah enjoyed the outdoors and many summers were spent camping with the family. Above all, she loved the beaches of New England: exploring Hampton, Rockport, Ogunquit, Woods Hole and Marblehead with a memorable summer on Vinalhaven Island off the coast of Maine. Once retired she and Ken spent their winters at Myrtle Beach enjoying close friendships with other snowbirds. She served as a Girl Scout leader for many years, played the organ and was choir director at her church, hosted "couples club" dinners, and participated on various church committees. A beautiful knitter, Sarah made gorgeous ski sweaters, gloves and hats for local benefits. An avid reader, she served on committees for the Thayer Library in Lancaster.

Following Ken's death on July 2, 2014 and a life together of 68 years, Sarah moved to Georgia to be with family.

Ken and Sarah had four children, Karen Bruck of Marietta, GA, Pam Leach of Old Forge NY, Ken Garber of Gill, MA and Todd Garber of Hermon, ME. They also had nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

At her request, a private burial will take place at Eastwood Cemetery in Lancaster.
