Spyridon Garoulis Obituary

Spyridon "Spiro" Garoulis, 90, of Sever Street, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, under the loving care of his family and the staff at MetroWest HomeCare and Hospice.

Spiro was born and raised in Athens, Greece, the son of Vasilios M. and Agathe (Antoni) Garoulis, and was educated in Greece where he attended four years of college. In 1947 as a young man, he journeyed to the United States to further his education at Worcester Junior College and received a degree in mechanical engineering from Northeastern University in Boston. After returning to his home in Greece, Spiro met the love of his life, Demetra "Toula" Matheoulis, and they married in 1954. Spiro returned to Worcester and purchased and furnished a seven-room home on Sever Street, and then brought his wife and son back from Greece to their new home.

He was a mechanical engineer and worked for over 30 years at Morgan Construction Co. in Worcester retiring in 1983. In the early 1950's into the mid 1960's, he introduced a radio series titled, "Worcester Hellenic Hour," a weekly program offering Greek music to the listeners of WORC radio station.

Spiro was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Worcester and its men's AHEPA. He was a 32 Degree Mason and member of the Montacute Lodge of Masons in Worcester, Scottish Rite Bodies of Worcester, Worcester Consistory, and Aleppo Temple Shrine in Wilmington.

He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, Demetra "Toula" (Matheoulis) Garoulis; his son, Vasilios "Billy" S. Garoulis and his wife Jeana of Worcester; his two beloved grandchildren, Christina M. and Michael S. Garoulis both of Worcester; a sister, Eveydiki Economou, wife of the late Vasilios Economou of Worcester; a niece, Elli Athanasiou and her husband Archie of Worcester; a nephew, Constindine Economou and his wife Cheryl of Sturbridge; many great nephews and nieces. Spiros' family would like to thank Joshua Cicio for all the help and loving care he gave to "Papou" - it will be forever remembered.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 12, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. A Trisagion Prayer Service will be held during calling hours. The funeral service for Spiro will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 13, at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street, Worcester, followed by burial at Hope Cemetery in Worcester. I will always remember Spiro as a energic and happy man especially when he came into TD Bank. The visits with he and Demetra (and her cookies) were more social than business. He could light up a room with his smille. My condolence and prayers.
