Theresa Saldana, best known for starring on the TV series "The Commish," has died at the age of 61, according to TMZ.

The actress passed away after suffering from an unknown illness for which she was hospitalized.

Saldana played Rachel Scali, wife of lead character Tony Scali who was played by Michael Chiklis. She received a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actress for her role on the show in 1994.

Her major movie roles included the part of Jake Lamotta’s wife in the movie "Raging Bull" and she also starred in the Robert Zemeckis film "I Wanna Hold Your Hand."

In 1982, Saldana was attacked by a stalker in front of her apartment building and was stabbed numerous times. A delivery man intervened even though others were also witnesses and she survived after a long stay in the hospital.

Saldana founded the Victims for Victims organization and lobbied for a 1990 anti-stalking law and the 1994 Driver's Privacy Protection Act, both of which gained attention for passing after her attack. The experience inspired Saldana to play herself in the television movie “Victims for Victims: The Theresa Saldana Story," and she wrote a book titled “Beyond Survival," a memoir of her experiences after the attack.

She is survived by her husband Phil Peters, and daughter Tianna Peters.
