William Bright Obituary
William Ellery Bright III

Vero Beach - William (Bill) Ellery Bright III, 96, passed away peacefully at Somerset House, in Oak Harbor, Vero Beach, FL, on Sunday, September 2, 2018.

Bill suffered with dementia for the last nine years, however, never lost his irrepressible wit and humor.

He was born in Worcester, MA, to William Ellery Bright Jr. and Margaret Norcross Denholm on March 6, 1922. He graduated from Middlesex School in 1940, and attended Harvard University, Class of 1944.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corp, precursor to the U.S. Air Force, in 1942, graduating as an Aerial Navigator in 1943. He became a 2nd Lieutenant in the 8th Army Air Force, based in Bury St. Edmund, England, the "Family" seat of the Brights. On March 18, 1944, his B-17,"The Little Audrey" was on it's 14th bombing run over Munich, and his plane was struck by an incendiary bomb from a US B-17 flying out of formation. Bill had the awareness to act quickly and kicked out the front escape hatch, parachuting with 4 others to farmland in Aschein, Germany. Seven of the ten crew of the "Little Audrey" survived and were transferred to Stalag Luft III, a day after The Great Escape, for the remaining 13 months of the war.

In 1946, he married Elizabeth (Bunny) Trumbull Barton (d. 2004) They resided in Worcester, MA. Bill held Executive positions at Crompton Knowles Corporation, Rice Barton Corporation, and White and Bagley Company. They moved to Vero Beach in 1991, to enjoy their passion, Golf, as members of the Moorings Club and Oak Harbor Club.

He leaves behind three children, Elizabeth (Lisa) Trumbull Bright, married to Philip B. Smith, Jr., of Vero Beach, FL, William (Terry) Ellery Bright IV, married to Lynn Hulen Bright, and their two children, Whitney Hulen Bright, of Cherry Hills Village, CO, and William (Will) Ellery Bright V, married to Todd Bright-Frare, their son Lincoln, of Denver, CO, and Jeffery(Jay) Bright, of New Orleans.

The family wishes to thank all his Nurses, and the staff at Somerset House, Oak Harbor for all their care and love.

A Service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, in Worcester, MA, later this fall. The family request that contributions in lieu of flowers should be sent to VNA of The Treasure Coast.
