Mary C. Murphy, 86

WORCESTER - Mary C. (Mahan) Murphy, 86, died peacefully surrounded by her family on November 29, 2017.

She is predeceased by her husband of 35 years, James F. Murphy and a daughter, Maureen F. Saint John. She leaves a son, James M. Murphy and a daughter, Kathleen M. Huston and her husband Todd Huston of Worcester, MA. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Caitlin M. Filip and husband, Nathan Filip of Holden, MA, Ryan M. St. John of Holden, MA, Dr. James D. Saint John and wife, Katelyn Saint John of Culver City, CA and W. Todd Huston Jr. of Worcester, MA. She was also blessed with two great grandchildren, Lyla Maureen Filip and Joseppi James Saint John.

Mary was born in Worcester, MA, daughter of the late James P. and Mary O'Connell Mahan and lived here all her life.

She graduated from North High School in 1949 and Worcester State Teachers College in 1953. She was a kindergarten teacher in the Worcester Public Schools, teaching 30 years at Thorndyke Road School, retiring in June 1995. She took great pride in the hundreds of students that passed through her classroom while encouraging the importance of reading and music.

Mary spent the many years of her retirement enjoying her family and friends, but mostly being Nana.

She was a member of the Massachusetts Retired Teachers Association, MTA, REAM, the Guild of Our Lady of Providence, Worcester State University Alumni Association, the Friday Afternoon Club and a life member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, December 6, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Rosary Church 25 Fales St., Worcester. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, December 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. Flowers may be sent, or memorial contributions may be made to The Carroll Center for the Blind, 770 Centre St., Newton, MA 02458.
