Robert A. Sweeney, 84

WORCESTER - Robert A. Sweeney, 84, of Worcester, died Monday, December 4, 2017 at the UMass-Memorial Medical Center,

He was born in Worcester, son of Edwin T. and Helen T. (Donovan) Sweeney, and lived in Worcester all his life.

Mr. Sweeney was a 1952 graduate of St. John's High School, then in Worcester, and a 1956 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. He earned a master's degree in education at Boston State Teacher's College in 1957, which is now the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959 including a year in East Africa.

Mr. Sweeney was a teacher at the Hubbardston Center School for 34 years, retiring in 1993. He taught in grades four through eight during his long career as an educator.

He was a longtime member of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish and the Greendale YMCA. He enjoyed landscaping and reading.

He leaves his sister Teresa M. Sweeney, with whom he lived, a brother Dr. Edwin A. Sweeney of Penn., and several nephews and nieces, including his godchild Ellen M. Sweeney. He was predeceased by his brothers Francis J. and James T. Sweeney, and his sister Mary G. Buckley.

There will be a calling hour Saturday, December 9, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 25 Fales St., Worcester. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
