Barbara Cecil Buist SCHMIDT

SCHMIDT, Barbara Cecil BuistDied on February 15, 2013, surrounded by her loving family after an extended illness. She was born in Nashville to Roberta Cecil Buist and William Edward Buist, Jr. on October 8, 1942. Growing up in Nashville, she enjoyed waterskiing and sailing with her father on Old Hickory Lake. She graduated from Harpeth Hall High School, and attended Hollins College as a freshman. She graduated from Vanderbilt University where she majored in French and speech therapy. During college, she spent a semester abroad in southern France and enjoyed backpacking through Europe with her classmates Kate and Diane. Barbara was an avid reader, gardener and hiker. She had an inquisitive mind and was a lifelong student of religion and philosophy. She met her second husband Don while sailing in the Bahamas, where she lived for several years. Later she and Don purchased land in Antimony, Utah where they built a ranch and raised Tennessee Walking Horses. Her passion for the last 12 years was the development of a methodology and program to teach reading skills to children. She is pre-deceased by her parents, her husband Donald Herbert Schmidt, of Ontario, Canada, and her brother Neil Hamilton Buist. She is survived by daughter, Kathryn Barry Johansen (Zhon) of Lehi, UT; brother William Edward Buist, III (Nancy) of Atlanta, GA; cousin Marjorie Cecil Ewin of Nashville, and ex-husband Richard Barry of Nashville. A memorial service is planned for Friday April 26, at 10:30 at the St. Augustine Chapel on Vanderbilt campus in Nashville.
