Joyce JOHNSON Obituary

JOHNSON, JoyceAge 69. Joyce Johnson made a peaceful transition from human existence to spiritual life on Sunday, May 5, 2013. She was born August 12, 1943 in Nashville to the late Mary Montgomery and William Roscoe Robinson. Joyce received her early education in Davidson County Schools, including Cameron High School. Her belief in education and service was lifelong. She first trained as a nurse's technician and worked in that capacity on the pediatric ward at Baptist Hospital for many years. Her marriage to the late Reverend Joseph Johnson brought her great joy and confidence. She returned to school as an adult, and graduated with cum laude honors from American Baptist College in Nashville, TN, attended Vanderbilt University, and completed a Master's degree in education at Tennessee State University. From that time onward, she taught in the Nashville Public Schools. From an early age, Joyce professed belief in Christ, serving as church secretary at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church on Herman Street for many years. She constantly wrote and published poems of faith, her most significant being a yet unpublished summary of the Old Testament in rhyme. Joyce was a motivational speaker at many different churches. Her religious tentacles included her mother, a pioneering female minister, her husband's ministry, other family members, Pastor Samuel Orr and ministers Kathy Orr and DeCarlos Robinson, and her friend, Rev. Beatrice Pat Crush. Preceded in death by 2 sisters. Joyce leaves to cherish her memory, a daughter, Dr. Latanya Sweeney of Cambridge, MA; a brother, Onie Robinson of Nashville, TN; a sister, Georgetta Halloway of Maryland; a grandson, a host of nieces and nephews; a devoted friend, Elaine Reese, and many other relatives and friends. All will miss Joyce and her radiant smile. Viewing Friday, 12-6 p.m. Visitation Saturday, 10-11 a.m., with funeral to follow at Terrell Broady Funeral Home, 3855 Clarksville Pike.
