Mr. Richard Lamar Mowery, 90, died Saturday, June 14, 2014 at his residence in Nashville.

The Elkhart, Indiana native was the son of the late Daniel Lamar and Elta Mae Warfel Mowery. He was the widower of Velma Marshall Mowery who died in 1998. He was a long-time resident of West Palm Beach, Florida having been affiliated with the West Palm Beach Post for 36 years. He proudly served our country in the first Marine division of the United States Marine Corps. Having joined the Marines two weeks after Pearl Harbor, his first landing over seas was Guadalcanal, after which he survived four more South Pacific campaigns until losing his leg to the battle in Okinawa. He enjoyed yard work, carpentry, collecting antiques, being with family and friends and helping people. Active and optimistic, he positively touched the lives of everyone he met. He is loved and will be missed by so many who hold him dear.

He is survived by four grandchildren, Maracah (Jason) Kiser, Joshua Desprez, Marshal (Monica) Mowery, and Jesse (Jazzi) Mowery; two great grandchildren, Casey (Alyssa) Phetteplace and Madraia Kiser; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Dennis Mowery.

A Celebration of Life Graveside will be conducted Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 12 Noon at Historic Spring Hill Cemetery. The United States Marine Honor Guard will provide military honors at the cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center.
