Roger Gohrband

Roger Gohrband was born in Portland, Oregon on May 21, 1930 to Ernest and Pauline Gohrband. He passed away peacefully August 10, 2014 at home with his family at his side.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; his children, Chris (Natalie), Lezlie Murray (Paul) and Gregg (Sarah), and grandchildren, David (Lara), Jonathan, Sarah Murray, Jeffrey, Steven, Dana Murray, and Abigail.

He was predeceased by grandson, Alex Murray.

At Oregon State University, he was a member of Theta Xi fraternity; he graduated in 1951 with a BS degree in Chemical Engineering. Roger served in the Army for three years, including combat service in Korea, where he was awarded a Bronze Star and Air Medal for meritorious service. After fulfilling his military service obligation, he left the Army to attend Harvard

Business School, graduating with an MBA in 1956. Roger worked for Dow Chemical Company for 30 years in several different positions, retiring in 1986 in Midland, Michigan, after five years as Director of Corporate Planning and Business Development. From 1986 to 1991, he helped lead the redevelopment of downtown Midland as a consultant to the Midland County Growth Council. He was elected to the Midland City Council for three terms and served as Mayor for one year. He was dedicated to community service. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America his whole life. He enjoyed Rotary, serving as Chapter President for one term. He also enjoyed the Midland-Handa (Japan) Sister City Committee that he chaired. He was a long-time member of Memorial Presbyterian Church in Midland, serving as an Elder and Trustee. In 2009, Roger and Virginia moved to the Heritage at Brentwood. He shared his love for water skiing, snow skiing, sailing, and summers at the lake with his family and he loved traveling with Virginia to many foreign countries.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2014 in the Chapel at First Presbyterian Church, 4815 Franklin Pike, Nashville, TN 37221. The Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the service time in the Cheek House.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Water and Woods FSC, 507 W. Atherton Road, Flint, MI 48507; or the Midland Area Community Foundation (MACF), 76 Ashman Circle, Midland, MI 48640.

The family thanks Guardian Hospice and the caring aides from Health at Home at the Heritage for their good care.
