John FLEXNER Obituary

FLEXNER, M.D., John M. Professor of Medicine Emeritus at Vanderbilt University, died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center on December 27th, 2011 after a brief illness. He was 85 years old. After two years in the U.S. Navy, Dr. Flexner received his A.B. from Yale in 1950 and his M.D. from Johns Hopkins in 1954. He completed internship and residency at Vanderbilt and Yale before completing fellowship training in Hematology at Vanderbilt. After completing his postdoctoral fellowship in 1959, Dr. Flexner enjoyed a lengthy career teaching and practicing medicine at Vanderbilt, the Nashville Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Nashville General Hospital, and Meharry Medical College. In 1974, he was selected for membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society. He was the American Cancer Society Professor of Clinical Oncology at Vanderbilt from 1981-1991, one of only 17 in the U.S. Memberships in professional societies included the American Association of Cancer Education, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology, Davidson County Medical Society, Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association, Nashville Academy of Medicine, and Sigma Xi Fraternity, a national honorary medical fraternity. He published more than 80 medical articles, mostly in the field of leukemia and lymphoma, and wrote book chapters on death and dying, and the management of cancer pain. He was a Distinguished Alumnus of the Webb School in Bell Buckle, where he graduated in 1944. A favorite of Vanderbilt medical students, he was regularly honored with inclusion in the yearly student composite picture in the 1970's and 80's. Dr. Flexner wrote several highly-cited papers regarding the clinical course of T-cell lymphomas, and contributed to seminal work in the immunological classification of lymphomas. His passion however, was his work regarding the role of the physician in the care of dying patients. Together with Dr. David Barton, with whom he taught the "Death, Dying, and Bereavement" course at Vanderbilt, he founded Alive Hospice of Nashville in 1975. He considered this his greatest legacy. Dr. Flexner is survived by his wife, Glenda Skinner of Nashville; four children, John Lindsey Flexner of Landenberg, PA, Charles Williams Flexner of Ellicott City, MD, Anne Conley of Marietta, GA and Morris Carter Flexner of Athens, GA; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The Burial Office will be said for Dr. Flexner at Christ Church Cathedral in Nashville on Friday, December 30th at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Alive Hospice of Nashville.

I will never forget our hunting trips! I am the grandson of Dr. Flexners best friend, Moulton Farrar. I went on many hunting trips with my grandfather and Dr. Flexner growing up from the time I was 10 til I was 18. Dr. Flexner teached me how to clean a dove. I will always remember his funny ways, loud jolly laugh, and those darned cigars....

I have been a faculty member at Vanderbilt in Nephrology for 26 years. During that time , I had the privilege of working with John Flexner. He is one of my few professional heroes, a great doc, a passionate patient advocate and a memorable style( John never had to tell you something twice). I also really admired how he kept on working late into his life a model i hope to emulate. Julie Lewis

I was a patient of Dr. Flexner in 1961 at Vanderbilt. He saved my life. He was 35 and I was 23. He was a lot of fun to watch!

Dear Lindsey, Charles, Anne and Morris, please accept my symparthy for your Dad. I have many fond memories of "Doc" especially the time I was spending the night at your home, but arrived after midnight and the back door was locked. I rolled out a sleeping bag in the carport with the dog food and slept comfortably until I heard "GASP" when Doc came in to feed the dogs that morning and thought I'd OD'd! I recall him preparing country breakfasts for us and his hospitality when visiting the Flexner home on Wallace. You may recall he mentored me after my UTK graduation when I was hired as a District Executive with the Tennessee Division of the American Cancer Society. His leadership for the ACS, including serving as President, was an inspiration. Sincerely, Andy Currey

I worked with and for "Flex" at Vanderbilt many years ago, and kept in touch with he and Barbara for a while. We acknowledged a respect for each other as "Aries babies" a long time ago. The world of medicine has experienced a great loss, but his contributions will live on.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I have many happy memories of the years we lived next door to you. He was a good friend and neighbor to us - I remember how he helped us when I broke my leg and later when I cut my leg. Your family is in my prayers.

Flexner family, I send my deepest condolences. You were great neighbors for the years Mom, Mike, Shelley and I lived next door. Although we lost contact over the years, I still have many happy memories. Mom passed away back in February, but a very close friend of hers saw this and sent it to me. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Morris and family - the Athens EPA family is keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers tonight. I sent a link out to the division from Vanderbilt that talked about your Dad's accomplishments with his medical practice and the wonderful hospice services in Nashville. What a talented and wonderful father he was! I am glad that I was able to meet him that morning at the Golden Pantry after you fishing expedition with Sam and John. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
