Paul Shields Obituary

Rev. Paul Shields

Nashville, TN

Rev. Paul Rees Shields, age 85, of Nashville, TN, went to be with the Lord on December 28, 2016 surrounded by his family, after a short battle with cancer. He was born in Erlanger, KY on April 20, 1931, to the late, Rev. C.F. and Almeta Shields. Paul was also preceded in death by his wife, Trudy Shields and brother, Gene Shields.

Paul was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, stationed in Germany. He was a proud member and trombonist of the 7th Army Headquarters Band.

Paul received his undergraduate degree in Religion and Music from Trevecca Nazarene University and his M.Ed. in Guidance and Counseling from MTSU. He taught elementary and high school band for several years in Nashville area schools.

His ministry included churches in Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana and Iowa. After retirement from full-time ministry, he made 17 mission trips to Haiti. For the past ten years, "Pastor Paul" has volunteered as visitation pastor at The Grace Place. His ministry exuded the love of Christ. Everyone who was fortunate enough to know him soon found out what it was like to be loved. That truly became his mission for life.

He is survived by wife, Nelda Shields; children, Rebecca Gamble and her husband, Ben Carmona and Ronnie (Cindy) Shields; step-children, Jeff (Leigh) Meadows and Tim (Sandra) Meadows; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Paul's Life will be conducted 5 p.m. Friday, December 30, 2016 at The Grace Place, 4316 Central Pike, Hermitage, TN with Pastor Tommy Dove officiating. Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Friday at the church. Interment with military honors will be conducted 12 noon Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Memorial Hill Cemetery in Albany, KY.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Grace Place Honduras Mission Project, 4316 Central Pike, Hermitage, TN 37076.

Our sympathy and prayers to all Rev. Shields family and friends. We have known and loved Paul since 1954 during Trevecca Days. So thankful for his life and ministry, especially good memories of his music in the church several years ago. Our paths went different directions in ministry, but never forgot his life and love for the Lord Jesus.

Although Pastor Paul prayed for so many, I will never forget his prayers for my healing. He loved so deeply and gave of himself to those who needed him whether he knew them or not. I have thanked God so often for Pastor Paul. He showed me what it means to trust in God. He never stopped his ministry-I know he is celebrating his homecoming with our God in heaven. My love to Nelda and his family. They were so blessed as were countless others.

Psalm 23:
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
