Age 87, passed away February 14, 2014. Born in Weslaco, TX on December 19, 1926. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred P. Archer and Dollie Thompson Archer; sisters, Mary Archer Nichols and Mildred Archer Vick; brothers, Alton Archer, Jewell Archer and Wilson Archer.

Survived by wife of 64 years, Sarah McCaghren Archer of Crossville, TN; brothers, Billy J. Archer of Austin, TX and Jimmy L. Archer of Buchanan Dam, TX; sons, George R. "Rick" Archer, Jr. of Nashville, TN and John Robert Archer, Sr. of Abilene, TX; grandchildren, Mathew Jacob Archer of Abilene, TX, John Robert Archer, Jr. of Lavergne, TN, Angela A. Archer of Mt. After graduating High School at the age of 17, he volunteered to join the U.S. Navy and served the country he loved so much on the USS Siboney in the Pacific Campaign during WWII. During this time, his home port was Pearl Harbor, and after the war was over, he went back to Guam, to help rebuild the island after the destruction it suffered during the war.

He attended the University of North Alabama and the University of Tennessee, and worked 31 years for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, TN, retiring in 1985 to run G.R. Archer & Sons, Registered Angus Farms, and pursue his passion for farming.

He was strong in his religious convictions, and always put God and family first and job second. He embodied a work ethic that defied description, and was always involved in the community. Serving as President of the local Ruritan Club, and the Loudon County Cattleman's Association. He was a life member of the Sweetwater, TN VFW, and was the Buguler for the State of Tennessee, playing taps at numerous military funerals and events. Always a strong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, and served as the Institutional Representative to the Great Smokey Mountain Council. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and traveled to every state in our great nation.

The family wishes to give thanks to the special caregivers of the Cumberland County Hospice, Crossville, TN and Alive Hospice of Nashville, TN, and a very special thank you to the incredible friends and neighbors for the many meals, helpful errands, and support through recent years.

The family will have a Celebration of Life Memorial at a later date in order to accommodate the many out of town friends and family members. Memorial donations may be made to the Middle Tennessee Council of the Boy Scouts of America, 3414 Hillsboro Pike, Nashville, TN 37215; or the Wounded Warrior Project.

Still drinking my coffee from the black and gold E-E cup. Thank you, Dick

Dick was one of the finest men I've ever know. He was a wonderful, loving husband, father and grandfather....and to me the best father-in-law possible. There are not enough adjectives to express how honest, considerate, and loving a man he was. I thanked he and Sarah on more than one occasion for setting such a wonderful example for their boys, and raising such wonderful men...Dick, can't wait to see you again.

Dick's passing marked the loss of one more of "The Greatest Generation." They don't make them like that any more. In 1994, the 50th anniversary of his graduation from Edcouch-Elsa High School, Dick brought coffee cups to distribute to those attending. It says "Have a Cup on Me." I always pause when I have my morning coffee from my black and gold cup to say, "Thank you, my friend."
