In memory of Helen Pate Bain.

I met Dr. Helen Bain at Austin Peay State University where she immediately told me to go stay in her beach home on Ft. Morgan. What a wonderful experience. She knew we did not have any money, so she said go and stay for a week and enjoy which is what we did. She was fiesta, knowledgeable and lovely. Just found out that she has left us on this earth. Will always remember you, Helen and your wonderful giving spirit.

Ms. Bain changed many of her students lives. She was an inspiration to all of us who had the honor of being in her class. As 7th grade students in a big Cohn High School, she motivated, and protected us to some extent. She took us places many of us had never been and inspired us to greatness. She will never know how much she influenced so many lives.

As far as public speaking goes, how about "Stand Up, Speak Up, Shut-up!" as another of her rhetorical aphorisms.
I emailed her a few years ago and Mrs. Bain responded...mind sharp as a tack. Rode out a hurricane while in Gulf Shores(I think Katrina). A real lady and an inspiration as were so many at Cohn in our day. It is a tribute to Mrs. Bain and the faculty that so many of us became teachers.
Would not exchange my life experiences in West Nashville and Cohn for anything. People like Mrs. Bain are an example in life and a legacy in their passing. Condolences to the family...

I will always remember how loving and caring Mrs. Bain was with all her students. When I was getting ready to go into the 7th grade, she came to our house to meet me and my parents. She explained that I would be in her homeroom for 2 years and wanted me to know that I could come to her with anything and she would do her best to help. That was back in the early 60s. About 15 years ago I attended an Alumni function at Cohn High School. Mrs. Bain was there also. I was amazed that she remembered me and my name after all these years. She knew all of her students well and we shared some memories of those school years. Mrs. Bain will be missed by so many people. We need teachers like her now. She was definitely one in a million.

A lesson Mrs. Bain gave us in speech class applies equally well in life: TALK TO THE BACK ROW. As you project your voice, don't leave anyone out. Everyone counts. May God comfort her family and many friends whose lives she graced.

I had Mrs. Bain as a teacher at Cohn High School and an excellent one she was. She was also instrumental in the development of the Green Hills Apartments for Retired Teachers. Mrs. Bain contributed so much to Nashville and to education. As a former student, I appreciate the knowledge that I gained and will always have the great memories of you and Cohn High School.

Deepest sympathies to the family. Helen was a good friend to me while we were both members at Glendale Baptist Church and lived around the corner from me on Leland Lane. My kids and I remember trudging through deep snow one year to her house for worship when the church was unable to open. I admired her so much.
