J. MINKEL Obituary

MINKEL, J. R. Age 31 of Nashville, TN. January 24, 2011. J.R. Minkel holds a Master's Degree in Science and Environmental Reporting from New York University and a B.S. in Molecular Biology from Vanderbilt University, where he dabbled in zebrafish genetics. From 2006 to 2008, he covered space and physics for ScientificAmerican.com. His freelance work has appeared in Scientific American, Popular Science, New Scientist, Discover, IEEE Spectrum, and The Scientist. From January to June 2008, he amused his colleagues by standing while he worked. From 2008 and on, he was a "lab rat" and freelance journalist for Scientific American, Physical Review Focus and LiveScience. He is the author of Instant Egghead Guide to the Universe. In 1997, he graduated from Overton High School with honors. Survived by mother, Michele Minkel; brothers, John Minkel & William Martin Minkel III; and sister, Wendy Sullivan. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 3 p.m., at Woodbine Funeral Home, Hickory Chapel, 5852 Nolensville Road. Interment Christ Church Memorial Gardens. Family & friends will serve as Pallbearers. Visitation Saturday, 1-3 p.m., at WOODBINE FUNERAL HOME, HICKORY CHAPEL Directors, 615-331-1952, Still Family Owned
