Mary Jo Boehms Obituary

Mary Jo Boehms

Jackson, TN

Mary Jo Fulton Boehms, age 72, died Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at her residence. She was born November 11, 1944 in Nashville, TN to the parents of Joseph and Mary Douglas Bayles Fulton.

Mary Jo was a life well lived. She wore many hats: daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, cousin, aunt, teacher and friend. Her life journey was one we could all use as an example. She was always interested in others and their well being.

She attended Austin Peay State University then transferred and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Tennessee with a Business Administration in Education degree. She went on to obtain a M.S. in Management, Summa Cum Laude from University of Memphis. She began her teaching career at Hume Fogg Technical High School in 1966, where she taught one of the first high school computer classes in the state of Tennessee. She married Tony in 1966, and they had 2 children: Jenny (born in 1970) and John (born in 1972). Her career as a college professor began at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, TN and also taught at University of Tennessee at Nashville. When the family moved to Jackson, TN, she taught at Lambuth College and Jackson State Community College. Her career at Jackson State extended over 35 years. Teaching was her passion. She loved her students and took pride in investing in their future. In addition to her career, family was her pride and joy. She and Tony traveled many miles to visit her children and grandchildren and was at as many activities as possible.

She was a member of Northside United Methodist Church for over 20 years, and she was very active in her church. She was also active in a number of civic activities in the community.

After she was diagnosed with cancer, she became a big supporter of many other cancer patients. She had a "never-give-up" attitude that was contagious. She fought cancer to the end of her time on earth. We are thankful for the years we had with her, and we know God has a special place for her.

She is survived by her husband Tony Boehms of Jackson, TN, one son, John Beale (Nancy Ann) Boehms of Franklin, TN, and one daughter, Jenny Jo (Douglas) Horn of Alcoa, TN. Three grandchildren, Ridge Boehms, Sage Boehms, and Maggie Horn. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Thomas Fulton.

SERVICES: A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Northside United Methodist Church with Don Thrasher and David Comperry officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at Northside United Methodist Church.

On Friday, July 21, 2017 a visitation will be held from 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens in Goodlettsville, TN at 2:00 P.M. with burial to follow in the cemetery.

Pallbearers to serve are Ridge Boehms, Terry Mullins, Dr. Larry Bailey, Ryan Brownyard, Brian Williams, Douglas Bayles, Jody Bayles, Mike Galpin, Jerry Strebel, Tom Ryan, Ben Lawrence, Mike Bowen, Roger James, and Keith Horn. Honorary pallbearers are the faculty staff of Jackson State Community College.

Not sure what to say?

I look at this picture today, of Mrs. Boehms, and I remember her precious smile. She brought so much into our class. She was a determined teacher, who wanted us to learn. I loved and respected her so very much. Again, I just want the family to know, I am just one of many, that Mrs. Boehms not only touched my life...but, also my heart. I will treasure my memories of her always. Respectfully, Kathie Mayo-Canter Class of 1970 Hume Fogg Tech

I named/designated her "Colonel Boehms" in 1969 at Hume Fogg Tech. I even had a name plate made at a local office supply store to grace her desk. Colonel Boehms, "Me and Meford made the effort". She was such a dedicated teacher. Youngsters today should be so lucky. Rest in the arms of the Lord.

My heart goes out to the Boehms family. Mrs. Boehms was a wonderful teacher at Hume-Fogg Technical & Vocational High School when I was her student in Bookkeeping I and Automated Data Processing in 1969. Her enthusiasm and patience were inspiring and I'm so thankful to her. Prayers for comfort and peace to all who were blessed to know her. ~Linda Phelps Hollars, Class of 1971

Mrs. Boehms was my statistics teacher at Jackson State and I was also assigned to her office for work study. She was one of the best instructors I've ever had and she has held a special place in my heart. I'm am saddened to hear of her passing but I am so glad to have known this special lady. May the peace of God rest with the family.
