Mary WHITSON Obituary

WHITSON, Mary Pope CreightonJune 22, 2012. Mrs. Whitson was born January 13, 1920 in Nashville, Tennessee, the daughter of Emma Joe Stout and Andrew Donelson Creighton. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two loving husbands, Robert Masters Crichton and William Burroughs Whitson; one son, Richard Stout Crichton and one grandson, Nicholas Stout Crichton. She is survived by three sons, Andrew D. Crichton (Eva James), Columbia, Robert M. Crichton, Jr. (Pam), Nashville, John Pope Crichton (Vivian), San Francisco, CA; two step-daughters, Jane Burroughs Whitson and Mary Gwynn Whitson, and two daughters-in-law, Mary Edgar Crichton and Margaret B. Crichton. Four grandchildren, Charles Worthington Crichton, Andrew D. Crichton, Jr., Robert M. Crichton III, Mary Gwynn Crichton and four great-grandchildren also survive her. Mary Pope attended Ward Belmont College and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1942 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature. She married her first husband, Bob Crichton, in 1943, and they lived in Nashville and raised four sons until his untimely death in 1970. Upon her marriage to Billy Whitson in 1971, she moved to McMinnville, TN where she lived until his death in 1998. She has since been a resident of Nashville. Mary Pope loved to read and play bridge, which she did until her death. She served as an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of McMinnville and was currently a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, and an active member of the Junior League of Nashville. Reverend Dr. Carson Salyer will conduct a graveside service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 26th at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Later that afternoon, a visitation will be held at the residence of Pam and Rob Crichton, 5105 Boxcroft Place in Nashville, from 3-5 p.m. The family would like to thank Kim Massey, Rhonda Easley, Brenda Sanders and Joanne Edmondson for their loving care of Mrs. Whitson.
