James Harvey "Jim" Ward
Age 93, passed away peacefully February 15, 2014. Born July 19, 1920 in Yatesboro, PA to the late Dr. James Ward and Agnes Harvey Ward.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Grayce Gilbert Ward and sister, Janet Ward Rousseau.
Survived by son, James Gilbert (Skip) Ward and his wife Yaprak Dalat Ward of Hays, KS; daughter, Susan Ward (Susi) Graves and husband Ken Graves of Franklin, TN; grandson, Gavin Marshall Graves of Nashville, TN; granddaughter, Lacey Graves Gerard and her husband Michael Gerard of Chicago, IL, and their children, Navab and Joseph Gerard.
Jim graduated from Thiel College in Greenville, PA with a degree in Chemistry. He then accepted his initial job in the steel industry, working for a company located outside of Pittsburgh, PA where he worked in the company's chemical lab. From there, Jim changed jobs to accept another position in Pittsburgh, where he worked until his induction in the U. S. Army during the later stages of WWII. Jim served in the Army's Quartermaster Corp for the duration of the war. It was after WWII and he was in the reserves, that Jim met his wife to be, Grayce Gilbert.
Jim lived in Hermitage for the last 46 years and, prior to his declining health, was an active member of the Hermitage Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon.
Jim was an avid gardener with a passion for growing flowers. He spent most of his free time in his yard, either manicuring plants or planting new ones, and his yard in Tulip Grove was always one of the prettiest in the area. This same passion resulted in Jim regularly working at the Church caring for the exterior plants and trees.
Visitation with the family will be at Hermitage Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens, located at 535 Shute Lane, Hermitage, TN on Friday, February 21st from 10 until noon. The funeral service will be at 12 Noon, conducted by the Reverend Julie Nyhuis of Hermitage Presbyterian Church, at the funeral home Chapel, with burial immediately afterwards.
