Robin Smith Obituary

Published by Tennessean on Jun. 25, 2017.
Robin Lynn Smith

Nashville, TN

Age 57, passed away June 22, 2017. Born November 21,1959, in Hyannis, Massachusetts, to Jean and George Smith.

Survived by her beloved husband of 36 years, Dean Schneider; children, Julie Schneider (Brian Henderson) and Andrew (Tessa) Schneider; parents, Jean Lowther, and George Smith; sisters, Heidi Waddell, Laura Rosenfield, and Diana Beckwith.

Robin graduated from Smith College and taught school in Deerfield, Massachusetts, Newark, New Jersey, and spent the last 24 years teaching second grade at Ensworth School in Nashville. An avid reader, Ms. Smith also reviewed books for Kirkus Reviews, BookPage, and the Horn Book Magazine. Knitting brought her much pleasure, and she especially enjoyed teaching her young students to knit along with their school skills. Her proudest accomplishment was watching her children grow into caring, responsible adults.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alive Hospice, any public library, or Planned Parenthood. Ashes will be sprinkled in the Atlantic Ocean near Little Cranberry Island, Maine. Online guest book at www.CallNFC.com

In 2011 when I was in 2nd grade at Ensworth, Ms. Smith awarded me a t-shirt from a book series for composing the most impressive spelling word sentences. Though it is now faded, has a few holes, and no longer reaches my knees, I still wear that t-shirt to sleep regularly, and every time I do, I think fondly of Ms. Smith and all the memories I have of her. She taught me so much more than just her role as a teacher. She taught me respect, creativity, kindness, humility, and most of all love. She taught everyone in her class to be loving and kind, and she showed us by example. Never have I felt so genuinely cared for by a teacher as I did with Robin Smith. As write this 6 years after she's passed, I've moved to a different country and I'm in university now. I still knit and sew regularly, using the skills she taught me years ago. I wish I could tell her how much I appreciate everything she taught me, and how I am reminded of all my wonderful memories whenever I wear my Bink & Gollie pyjama shirt. I don't know if anyone will read this, but if you do, I hope you know that people are still thinking of this wonderful woman all the time, and the impact she made on every single one of her students continues to guide us through life every day.
