LONG, Betty WittAge 79 passed away October 12, 2010, after a short illness. Preceded in death by parents, Carter Harrison Witt III, Mary Dora Abernathy Witt, and husband, William F. Long. Survived by children, William F. Long, Jr. (Ruth) and Shelley Long Cammack (Ward); grandchildren, Barron Franklin Long, Hallie Elizabeth Long, Cynthia Louise Long, Julia Wallace Cammack, Martha Locke Cammack, Alice Laird Cammack, Julia Meriwether Cammack and Ward Witt Cammack; sister, Jane Witt Forrest and brother, Carter Harrison Witt IV. Born in Aliceville, Alabama on March 30, 1931. Childhood home in Pulaski, Tennessee where father was school principal. Moved to the family home place outside of Lynnville, Tennessee, attended Jones High School, as valedictorian. Graduated Vanderbilt University, cum laude 1952; Master's Degree, English 1953; Assistant Dean of Women Students 1954. In addition to family responsibilities as a loving wife and mother, served as Research Analyst for Senate Education Committee for the Tennessee General Assembly; Administrative Assistant to Commissioner of Education Robert McElrath under Gov. Lamar Alexander; Director of Teacher Certification State of Tennessee. Active in Fannie Battle Day Home, The Study Club of Nashville, Hillwood Country Club, Centennial Club, West End United Methodist Church. Founder, director, officer John Laird Cemetery Association. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John Laird Cemetery Association c/o Barbara Russell, 1283 Main Street, Lynnville, TN 38472. Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 14th, 4-7 p.m. at Marshall Donnelly Combs Funeral Home. Visitation Friday, Oct 15th from 10-11a.m. with Funeral Services, 11 a.m. at West End United Methodist Church, Rev. John Feldhacker officiating.
