Dear Cousins and Friends:
Thank you for your messages of comfort and your thoughts about my Dad. In his effects, we found a letter to me, Pam, and Sue, this excerpt from which, I thought might be meaningful to you.
"It has been a good life.I consider myself a very lucky man, and finding Jean was the very best thing that happened to me. I wonder as I write this, if anything comes next. As she lay ill, Jean and I agreed rather smilingly that she would try to hold the bus she would soon be taking for me, or failing that, we would meet by the lily pond on Wright's Mill Road. When you read this, I will know. I love you all."
Now he knows. Goodbye Dad.

Catherine and I were very sad to hear about the sudden loss of Uncle Leon. We always enjoyed visiting with him when he came down to St Augustine. He accomplished so much in life, was a wonderful and brilliant man and did much to help both my father and brother get into Vanderbilt. Although we are sad not to have Uncle Leon here with us anymore, I know Aunt Jean is happy to have him back with her forever, in Heaven.

We will all miss Uncle Leon. He and Aunt Jean were so kind to our children. We were fortunate to visit with them throughout the years. Buried under all that amazing intellect, humor and burly gruffness was a loving, generous spirit that adored his wife and family. We are thinking of you all.

I am very sorry to see this news about Dr. Cunningham. He was a good, honorable man who contributed much to Vanderbilt University and his community. I can't begin to possibly know the depth of grief and feelings that his family is experiencing now. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Cunningham was a brilliant man and a loving father-in-law. I will treasure the times he sat and “chatted” with me and let me have a glimpse into that brilliance. It is an honor to be among the many lives he touched. I will miss him deeply

Hugh, Pam, Sue and all. I was so sad to hear about Uncle Leon. I know that he is now at rest and with your Mom, whom he missed dearly. He truly made an impact on the science community through his career. I know you all will miss him and that he loved you very much. Please know all the Columbus Cunninghams will be praying for you all on Thursday. We love you all very much. Wish I could be there with you.
