Rev. Canon Donald E. Evans(1933 - 2014)

Corning NY | The Reverend Canon Donald E. Evans, age 80, of Corning NY died on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at Corning Hospital.
He was born on March 18, 1933 in Harrisburg PA the son of Earl E. and Helene N. (Hansen) Evans. He married JoAnn Fae Stewart Schopf on February 24, 1968 at St. Stephen's Cathedral, Harrisburg PA.
Donald graduated from William Penn High School in Harrisburg PA, the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh PA, the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria VA, and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served from 1953 to 1955.
Donald was an Episcopal Priest having served at St. Andrew's Church in State College PA, Hope Church in Mount Hope PA, St. Paul's Church in Manheim PA, St. Mark's Church in Lewistown PA, and St. John's Church in Huntingdon PA.
His service in the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania included Chairman of the Department of Youth, Chairman of the Department of Stewardship, Officer of Diocesan Planning, member and Chairman of the Diocesan Finance Committee, member and Chairman of the Standing Committee, Deputy to the General Convention, and at various times, member of the Department of Christian Social Relations and Department of Missions, the Diocesan Council, and the Convocations of both Lancaster PA and Altoona PA.
In September of 1997, he and JoAnn moved from Huntingdon PA to Lancaster PA to spend retirement.
In May 2001, they moved to Corning to be closer to their daughter and her family.
Donald continued his service during retirement through Interim Ministry at St. Paul's Church in Manheim PA, St. Matthew's Church in Horseheads NY, St. Thomas Church in Bath NY, Church of the Good Shepherd in Savona NY and Church of the Redeemer in Addison NY.
Donald was proud to be a seventh generation Episcopalian.
His great-great-great-grandfather, Caleb Hopkins, was one of the founders of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Bath NY and the Episcopal Church in Angelica NY.
As a young boy, Don sang for many years with the St. Steven's Cathedral boys' choir in Harrisburg PA, and in recent years he sang as a member of The Mark Twain Barbershop Chorus.
Donald is survived by his wife, JoAnn, daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Stewart Evans Savoy and Christopher Savoy of Corning, and grandchildren, Claudia Melissa, Gretchen Fae, and Matthew Christopher Savoy.
He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Hansen Evans. He is also survived by his brother's wife, Twila Evans of Bethlehem PA, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Frederick G. and Patricia Stewart of Mt. Union PA, Pat Stewart of Elmira NY, June Stewart of Mt. Union PA, Carolyn J. and Max Lane of Three Springs PA, Edwin and Laura Mae Stewart of Winchester VA, D. Phil and Darlene Stewart of Mt. Union PA, Gladys Lane of Three Springs PA, and numerous nieces and nephews. Donald was predeceased by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert Stewart, Kenneth L. and Gladys Lamberson, Dale Stewart, Ronald Stewart and Jimmie Lane.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Donald will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Episcopal Church of The Redeemer, One Wombaugh Square, Addison NY.
