Shirley B. Mattone

Corning, NY | Shirley B. Mattone, age 83, of Corning, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Founders Pavilion.
She was born in 1930 to Eva and Lester Benjamin of Corning. Shirley graduated from Northside High School and in 1958 she married Michael Mattone with whom she would spend the next 55 years.
After graduating, she went to work for the New York Telephone Company as a telephone operator, where she enjoyed a long and distinguished career retiring from NYNEX in 1989.
Shirley was named Chief Operator of the Year for her dedication and service during the Flood of '72.
Shirley was known for her sense of humor and immaculate sense of fashion.
Shirley spent much of her time helping others. She was active with service organizations such as the Quota Club and The Pricillas.
In 2004, Shirley was honored with Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. She enjoyed shopping, cooking, and crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Michael Mattone; son, Michael S. Mattone of Corning; daughter, Pamela Mattone of Painted Post; sisters, Beverly Benjamin and Janet (Daniel) Ginnane, both of Corning; brothers: Donald Benjamin and Raymond (Jackie) Benjamin both of Campbell; and several nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her sister, Doris Pierson and brothers: Howard (Doris) Benjamin, Arthur Benjamin, and David Benjamin.
Family and friends are invited to call at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning, on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00pm.
A celebration of Shirley's life will follow calling hours there at 4:00 pm. Interment will take place at St. Mary's Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be sent to the -Rochester Chapter, 435 E. Henrietta Road, Rochester, NY 14620.
