Stewart Karl Sanders(1931 - 2014)

CORNING | Stewart Karl Sanders, age 82, of First Street in Corning, NY, died Friday, April 11, 2014.
He was born August 20, 1931 in Paterson, NJ, to Albert and Eleanor (Schoenberg) Sanders.
After serving in the US Navy, Stewart attended Fairleigh Dickinson University and in the early 1960s, moved to East Brunswick, NJ. He joined the sales force of Essex Systems as a printing broker, and later opened his own manufacturing plant. For more than 25 years, Stewart served as President of Sanders Business Forms, one of the largest independently owned specialty printing plants in the Mid-Atlantic region.
In 1989 Stewart and his wife Suzanne decided to sell the manufacturing business and pursue a new adventure. Their search lead them to the Finger Lakes Region, and in 1992, the couple purchased Rosewood Inn and became innkeepers.
Stewart was a member of The Professional Association of Innkeepers, The Empire State Bed and Breakfast Association, The Finger Lakes Bed and Breakfast Association and the Greater Corning Area Chamber of Commerce.
A self-proclaimed "news-junkie," Stewart stayed current with politics and word events, reading up to five newspapers daily. He enjoyed watching boxing and mixed martial arts and had an extensive collection of films and DVDs.
Stewart's greatest passion was cooking and insisted he was not a chef, but instead a "really good cooker," sometimes volunteering as a cook at the Corning Youth Center. He amassed a large collection of cookbooks, and published a collection of his own favorite recipes, entitled "Beyond Stew's Kitchen Door." Of all the meals he served in forty years to family, friends, and guests, he will be remembered for his signature breakfast dish, "Grandma Eggs."
He is survived by his wife, Suzanne; two daughters, Patti (Tim Levanduski) Sanders of NH, and Amy Mercurio of NJ; two sons, Larry (Jamie) Sanders of FL and Michael (Melissa Gethin) Panos of NC; grandchildren, Kaitlin, Russell, Om Mani Skye "Mo", and Hunter; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dave (Maureen O'Regan) Lauchaire of FL, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Nancy (Carl) Claunch of CA, Tracy (Jeff Davis) Lauchaire of NJ, Kelly (Stephen) Beattie of NJ, Joan (William) Weisbach of NJ, David (Michelle Guthy) Lauchaire of PA; nieces and nephews, Shannon, Brittany, Courtney, Lauren, Sean, Tyler, and Trevor; a "brother from another mother" Sam Malek; and his two beloved pugs, Mr. Lewie dePugma and Paulie-Boy. He was preceded in death by parents, and by his first wife Gertrude Sanders.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 25th from 1-3 and 5-7 PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 E. First Street in Corning. Services will be private for the family.
