Retired President of Corning Europe
Leroy (Lee) Wilson, former top executive for Corning Incorporated passed away peacefully on August 21, 2013 in Saratoga, California where he lived for the past seven years. He was 85.
Mr. Wilson grew up on a farm south of Indianapolis. He graduated from Purdue University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
He remained involved at Purdue throughout his professional career, including as a member of the Krannert School of Management Dean's Advisory Council.
He was honored as a Distinguished Engineering Alumnus in 1981.
Mr. Wilson spent his entire career with Corning Incorporated, joining the company right out of college after serving an assignment in the Army. After more than a decade with Corning, Mr. Wilson joined their International Division and moved to Zurich, Switzerland, spending the majority of the next 25 years managing various aspects of the company's international business.
His responsibilities took him to Switzerland, Belgium, France, and Great Britain. He also oversaw the company's South American operations for five years.
As head of the Electronics Division in the 1970's, Mr. Wilson was responsible for the development and implementation of the fiber optics business strategy that would change the course of the company.
His last assignment before retiring was President of Corning Europe.
In 1987, Mr. Wilson retired to his beloved Egypt House and farm in East Sussex, England.
He relocated to Saratoga, California in 2007 "for the weather", and to be closer to his identical twin brother, Tom.
Mr. Wilson is survived by his three sons, Paul (Karyn) of Purcellville, Virginia; Daniel (Elizabeth) of Sewickley, Pennsylvania; and Benjamin of Denver, Colorado; five grandchildren, Henry, Charles, Grace, Nicholas, and Paul; two step-children, Virginie and Antoine Delaforterie; and brothers, Thomas of San Jose, California and Robert of Reston, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his brother Glen Wilson, and parents Paul and Lula Wilson.
A memorial service will be held on September 23, 2013 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Los Gatos, California.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Los Gatos, California, or The Krannert School of Management, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana.
