Helen M. Roe Obituary
Helen M. Roe, age 93, of Corning, NY, died Friday, January 31, 2014, at Absolut Care at Three Rivers in Painted Post, NY.
Helen was born on March 7, 1920 in Manchester, NY to Harry and Winola (Norwood) Pardee. She married David Roe in 1938 and was preceded in death by him in 1998.
As a teenager she worked with a doctor who trained her and allowed her to assist him at many procedures that today would require a college degree. The Great Depression and family circumstances forced her to leave school, much to the doctor's chagrin, because he had offered to send her to medical school. Some 30 years later, with her husband's encouragement, she completed her High School Equivalency and went on to receive her Associate Degree from Corning Community College, graduating with distinction. After raising her family, she was an activities director in area nursing homes.
Over the years she has been a member of Methodist churches where she lived, singing in choir, teaching Sunday School, serving on nominating committee, and decorating for weddings and arranging altar flowers. She was a Lecturer at Beaver Dams Grange. An avid gardener, she also did landscaping, painting, and arts and crafts.
She is survived by: one daughter, Dianne Roe of Corning; four sons, David (Jacquelyn) Roe of York, PA, Howard Roe of Salem, OR, Brian (Marilyn) Roe of Vancouver, WA;, and Kevin (Margaret) Roe of Cazenovia, NY; a sister, Joanne (Laverne) Rose of Lindley, NY; grandchildren, Courtney (Dan) DeRusha of Corning, Tucker Roe of Versailles, KY, Bryce Roe of Boston, MA, David Earl (DeAnn) Roe of Dallastown, PA, Heidi (Frederick) Hensen of Shrewsbury, PA, Michael (Amanda) Roe of Vittsjo, Sweden, Emilia (Tom) Brasier of Camas, WA, Vincent Hagevig of Vancouver, WA, Andrew (Melyssa) Roe of Kalama, WA, and Daniel (Stephanie) Roe of Vancouver, WA; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Helen was predeceased by her great granddaughter, Alyssa Roe, and by 3 sisters and 5 brothers.
