Mary A. Reed Obituary
Mary A. Reed, age 86, of Wake Forest, NC, formerly of 282 West First Street, Corning, NY passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at her son's home in Wake Forest, NC, surrounded by loved ones after a long battle with vascular dementia.

Mary was born on May 26, 1927 in Boville Enrico, Italy to the late Achille and Lucia (Perciballi) Yorio.

She married Joel E. Reed on November 29, 1947 in St. Mary's Church in Corning, NY. He predeceased her on July 13, 2007. Mary graduated from St. Mary's School and immediately joined Corning Glass Works as a Quality Control Inspector. She worked there until 1958 when she became a fulltime housewife and began pursuing her favorite hobby, gardening.

For many years, Mary and Joe maintained a small greenhouse where they sold vegetable plants to local gardeners.

She also maintained a large garden where she would grow, harvest and preserve most of her own fruits and vegetables for winter use.

Mary was also known for her love of creating beautiful ceramic pieces, crocheting baby blankets, and spending many hours nurturing and cooking for family and friends. She was very devoted to her faith and transferred that devotion to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren through the love and care she gave each of them.

She will be deeply missed by her two sons and their families: Joel (Deborah Backer) Reed of Victoria, TX and their children: Carissa (Michael) Wiggins, Joel C. (Sabrina) Reed and Michael (Krissy) Reed; six great-grandchildren and Ronald (Dorothy Ketchum) Reed of Wake Forest, NC and their children: Shannon Reed (close friend Richard "Skip" Grube), Aaron Reed and Lauren Reed.

She is also survived by her brother: Thomas (Sylvia) Yorio; sister-in-law: Virginia Reed Eberle; and many close nieces and nephews and their spouses and children. Mary was also predeceased by her parents: Achille and Lucia Yorio; sister: Rosie and husband Fred Fratarcangelo; father and mother-in-law: Ralph and Minnie Mapes Reed; brothers-in-law: Ralph (Red), Wallace (Ree), Kenneth, Howard (Hot Bun), Robert (Bob) and Harry; sisters-in-law: Martha (Mart) and Pauline.

She was also recently predeceased by close nephews: Richard Fratarcangelo, Alexander (Al) Manuillow; several other nephews and nieces; and a special friend: Helen Nitsche.

Family and friends are invited to call at Carpenter's Funeral Home LLC on Friday, May 30, 2014 from 4:00PM-8:00PM with a Rosary for her reposed soul being held at 7:35PM at the funeral home by family members. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church on Saturday May 31, 2014 at 10AM with committal prayers and interment being held at the family plot in St. Mary's Cemetery in Corning.

Memorial donations in Mary's name may be directed to: Heartland Hospice, 3200 Atlantic Ave, Suite 100, Raleigh NC 27604; or to All Saints Academy, 158 State Street, Corning, NY; or to the Building Fund at St. Catherine's of Sienna Church, 520 West Holding Street, Wake Forest, NC 27587.

On Mary's behalf, the family would like to give special thanks to the following individuals who supported her spiritual well-being throughout the past few years and supplied her and her family with unconditional love and support during her illness: Paula Huskins, Clare Finertie, Ginger Jolley, Carole Halligan, Tu Tran, Pam Tarangelo, Fr. Phillip Tighe and Fr. Thomas Duggan. Also, the family would like to send a special thank you to Heartland Hospice Care (in particular, Karen, Ashley and Gretchen) for the incredible care and loving support that they gave both Mom and our family. Without the three of them, we could not have provided Mom with the excellent quality of life that she was fortunate enough to experience for the past three years. Kind words or memories of Mary may be shared with her family at www.carpentersfuneralhome.com.
