Evelyn (Thurston) Cole Obituary
Painted Post | Evelyn Thurston Cole, 92, of Painted Post, NY, formerly of Binghamton, NY, passed away on Saturday June 7, 2014 at Absolut Care at Three Rivers in Painted Post, NY.
Evelyn, born on July 11, 1921 in Binghamton, NY was the youngest of seven children born to Bessie (Jones) and Arthur S. Thurston. Evelyn graduated from Binghamton Central High School in 1939. She earned an award as outstanding typist and used those skills to secure her first job at The Ozalid Corporation. Evelyn resumed working in real estate after raising her family.
Evelyn was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Gerald A. Cole, all of her siblings and four nephews.
She is survived by her three children, Janice Cole Woodbury of Vero Beach, FL, Sharon Cole Verley and husband Alain of Cazenovia, NY and Douglas Cole and wife Gail of Painted Post, NY. Evelyn is also survived by six grandchildren, Elizabeth Woodbury Kasius and husband Andrew of Troy, NY, Douglas Woodbury of Los Angeles, CA and Alexander Woodbury and wife Allison of Hopkinton, MA, Derek Cole of Cazenovia, NY, Tracie Cole Drake and husband Daniel of Rochester, NY and Andrew Cole of Painted Post, NY. Six great grandchildren survive Evelyn. They are Elsa and Evelyn Woodbury, Lily and Reed Kasius and Hannah and Elijah Drake. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Helen Cole Hancock and several nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was an 80 year member of the Main Street Baptist Church in Binghamton, NY. She volunteered along with husband Jerry in many of the church programs. Evelyn was also active in PTA, Garden Club, the Inner Wheel of the Rotary Club and bridge and dance clubs.
Evelyn spent many enjoyable summers entertaining family and friends at her cottage at Wrighter Lake in northeastern Pennsylvania. She earned a reputation of baking "the best" huckleberry pie anywhere! The berries were harvested by none other than her husband Jerry!
Funeral and graveside services will be held at Vestal Hills Memorial Park, 3997 Vestal Road in Vestal, NY on Friday June 13th at 1:00 PM with Reverend Timothy Bennett officiating.
Contributions in Evelyn's memory can be made to the Main Street Baptist Church, 117 Main Street, Binghamton, NY 13901.
Evelyn's family entrusted her care to Haughey Funeral Home, Inc. in Corning, NY.
