Henry E. "Hank" Hagy

1926 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
Henry E. "Hank" Hagy Obituary
Henry E. "Hank" Hagy passed peacefully into the loving arms of God on July 16, 2014 at the Fairport Baptist Home, where he had been a hospice resident. He was predeceased, in 2007, by his wife of nearly sixty years, Barbara A. "Bobbie" (Dano) Hagy.

Born on July 7, 1926 in Reading, PA, he lost his father at an early age and, despite a serious brush with tuberculosis, from which he was nursed back to health by his mother - herself an RN - he relocated with his family to Scranton, PA where he graduated from Scranton Central High School in 1944.

Majoring in physics at the University of Scranton and graduating in 1948, Hank was hired by the late Howard Lilly at Corning Glass Works immediately after college, where he worked for more than 60 years, eventually becoming a global expert on "stress in glass", during which time his name appeared on thirteen of Corning's patents.

An accomplished professional drummer and avid rail enthusiast, he could be found on any given evening or morning playing a "gig" or "chasing trains" all over the Southern Tier. In later years, he most enjoyed his daily exercise class "with the ladies" at Healthworks.

A sober alcoholic for 41 years, and an ardent sponsor, mentor and mainstay at several AA chapter meetings in the area, he never tired of guiding others to and through recovery.

But Hank's pride truly rested in the lives and accomplishments of his five children: Kristine A. (Donald) Marshall of Louisville, OH, Paula H. (John) Pattison of Fairport, NY, Jeffrey R. (Marilyn) Hagy of Corning, Mary Ellen Hagy of Pompano Beach, FL and Annette L. (David) Malecki of Baldwinsville, NY, all of whom survive him; as well as grandchildren Melissa (Marshall) Allen, Benjamin Marshall, Teresa (Marshall) Orlando, Craig Pattison, Ross Pattison, Ryan Hewitt, Reid Hewitt, Emmanuel Morales, Alex Malecki and Katelyn Malecki, as well as great grandchildren Breila Allen, Lucas Allen, Grace Marshall and Lily Marshall.

Calling hours will be held on July 21st from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Haughey Funeral Home, Inc., 216 East First Street in Corning. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 222 Dodge Avenue in Corning on July 22nd at 9:30 AM. Burial will be in St. Catherine's Cemetery in Moscow, PA.

Memorial donations may be made in Henry's name to the University of Scranton or Alcoholics Anonymous.
