Walter J. Golden Obituary
Corning | Walter J. Golden, age 91, of Corning, passed away on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Absolut Care Of Three Rivers. He was born on May 8, 1923 in Corning and he married Juanita Weaver on July 3, 1943 at St. Mary's Church in Corning.
Walter was a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII where he participated in five European campaigns and was awarded the Army Good Conduct Medal, Africa-Middle East Medal with one Silver Service Star, the WWII Victory Medal and the New York State Medal for Merit in recognition of his military service. He retired from Corning Inc. in 1984 following 43 years of service. Walter was a long time member of American Legion, Elks Lodge of Corning, and VFW of Corning. He loved to play the accordion, fixing things and making people laugh. Walter also adored spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Juanita, children: Carole (Dennis) Cates of Long Beach, CA; Janice (Fred Grimm) Gross of Campbell; David W. (Sue) Golden of Beaver Dams; John J. Golden of Painted Post, and Greg (Brenda) Hafer of Corning; son-in-law, Harold Gross, sisters: Marion Bosket of Painted Post; Frances Harrington of Corning; Dawn (Ray) Meade of Missouri; brother, Ray Golden of Bath; grandchildren: Dana Van Vleet, Jennifer Cummings, Nestrelda Sims, SFC Robert W. Gross II, Harold Joseph Gross, Andrew Golden, Sarah Golden, Debra Hall, Christopher Golden, Ashleigh Higgins, Courtney Hafer, and Kiersten Hafer, many great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Walter was predeceased by a sister, Helen Burlingame.
It was Walter's wish that there be no calling hours. A celebration of life service and military honors will be held at the Bath VA Medical Center Chapel on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at 2:00 pm. A time of reflection will take place following the services at the Corning American Legion for friends and family.
