Joanna B. Boettner Obituary
South Corning, NY | Joanna B. Boettner, 88, of South Corning died peacefully at home on November 14, 2013, surrounded by her family. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, George Boettner, on March 22, 2010, and her very special granddaughter, Amy Snow, on September 9, 1995.
She is survived by her children: Carolyn (Peter) Calkins of Corning, NY, Jeffrey (Judy) Boettner of Campbell, NY, Barbara (James) Schirmer of Brighton, NY, and Susan (Thomas) Woodhouse of Canandaigua, NY.
She is also survived by three grandsons: Andrew (Tara) Snow of Wilton, CT, Matthew (Leigh) Schirmer of Penfield, NY, and Timothy (Tessa) Schirmer of Webster, NY.
She also leaves behind great-grandchildren: Molly, Phoebe, and Henry Snow and Camryn and Anna Schirmer.
Joanna was born in Shanghai, China while her father was employed by Standard Oil.
After moving back to the states at the age of two, her family was transferred many times to various locations.
She moved alone to Corning, NY, in 1944 to become a lab technician at Corning Hospital and met her future husband George in the choir at First United Methodist Church. Joanna loved her new home town and, while raising her family, spent many years volunteering at Corning Hospital, Corning Philharmonic, Civic Music, and Red Cross Blood Bank.
Joanna was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow recipient and she and George received the Corning Hospital Blue Ribbon Award in 2000.
They were also Legend Members of the Corning Country Club.
Her other loves were knitting, playing bridge, spending winters in Anna Maria Island, FL, and summers at their cottage on Keuka Lake where many happy memories were made with family and friends.
The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers for their dedication to our mother over the past few years.
We can't imagine what her life would have been like without their tremendous love and support.
A celebration of Joanna's life will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Any memorial donations can be made to CareFirst, 11751 East Corning Rd., Corning, NY 14830; Corning Area Community Concert Band, PO Box 943, Corning, NY 14830; or a .
