Donald L. Miller Obituary
SAYRE, PA. | Donald L. Miller, age 82, of Leisure Lane, Horseheads, NY, passed away on Monday, December 30, 2013 surrounded by his loving family at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA.
He was born September 22, 1931 in Johnstown, PA, the son of the late Rolla and Ellen Pearl (Miller) Miller. After graduating high school, Don served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1952. After serving in the military, Donald received his BS in Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh, class of 1958.
Don married Patricia Ann Cooper on June 15, 1957 in Johnstown, PA. She predeceased him on October 7, 1995.
Don is survived by four children: Douglas Miller of Corning, NY, Gary (Lisa) Miller of Elmira, NY, Greg (Kimberly) Miller of Battle Creek, MI and Lisa (James) Miller-Gray of Corning, NY; 9 grandchildren: Tammy (Rob) Miller, Jennifer Miller and Douglas Miller of Corning, NY, Andrew Miller and Emily Miller of Elmira, NY, Julia Miller, Margo Miller and Anna Miller of Battle Creek, MI, and Adah Gray of Corning, NY; brother-in-law: Edgar Giles of Johnstown, PA; sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Rae Ellen Billups and Charles Billups of Fort Meyers, FL; and brother, David Miller of Johnstown, PA.
In addition to his parents and wife, Don was predeceased by his sister, Lois Giles.
Don began his career at Penelec, in Johnstown, PA then accepted a position with Bucyrus-Erie in Erie, PA. In 1973 he relocated his family to the Big Flats area to continue his career at Ingersoll Rand before retiring in 1995 as the senior director of industrial and labor relations for Dresser-Rand in Painted Post, NY.
Don was an active board member for the Corning Chamber of Commerce, Corning Hotel Corporation, Three Rivers Development, Corning-Elmira All Sports Committee and the LPGA Corning Classic. His hobbies included a love of all sports and spending time with his family as an avid Elmira Jackals season ticket holder. He had a lifelong love for the Drum & Bugle Corp and a lifelong devotion to family pets, leaving behind his beloved cats, Victoria and Gracie.
Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Carpenter's Funeral Home, LLC, 14. E. Pulteney St., Corning, NY from 12:00pm to 2:00pm. A funeral service will follow at the funeral home at 2:00pm. A private burial with full military honors will take place in the family plot at Rural Home Cemetery, Big Flats, NY.
Flowers will be provided by the family. Those wishing may make memorial donations in Donald's name to the Chemung County Humane Society, 2435 State Route 352, Elmira, NY 14903.
