1918 – 2012
Harold Dewitt Woodworth, "Woody" went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 1, 2012. He was 93 years old, just two weeks shy of his 94th birthday. He will be deeply missed by his family. Woody was born December 15th, 1918 in Idaho Falls, ID to Laura and Gordon Woodworth. The eldest of nine children, Woody grew up during the Depression and eventually migrated to Southern California where he attended high school and met his 1st wife Maxine.
Following in his father Gordon's footsteps, he became a
for Los Angeles County. As
World War II
broke out Woody was drafted into the U.S Army and served as an infantryman with the 90th Infantry. He fought during the "Battle of the Bulge". While serving his country he was wounded two times earning
s. The last one almost cost him his leg when a German mortar landed right where he and his squad had been observing a town from a hilltop. Woody would later earn a
for bravery and was shipped home to recuperate from his wounds. He would carry over 15 pieces of shrapnel in his leg to remind him of the Great War.
Upon his return to civilian life, he went on to become a very successful fire fighter rising to the rank of Captain. He was well liked by his crew and that's where he earned his nickname, "Woody". He had three children with Maxine: Karen Woodworth Jepeway, Terry Woodworth, and Susan Woodworth Morlan.
Woody is survived by a sister, Marilyn Hansen Walker; a brother, Irvin Hansen Jr.; two daughters, Karen and Susan; four grandchildren: Michael, Laurie, David, and Mandy; 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. He left an enduring legacy, one of service before self.
