1923 – 2013

John M. "Jack" McKeon, age 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 16, 2013 after five months of complications following a stroke on Father's Day, 2013. Jack was born on January 1, 1923 to Daniel and Elizabeth (Reardon) McKeon. He was one of two children and after his father's untimely death, Jack was raised by his mother, Elizabeth, a Chicago schoolteacher. Jack grew up in Chicago, IL and enlisted in the Navy in 1944 serving on three naval carriers, the Roi, the Lexington, and the Princeton. During World War II, Jack was a pilot and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander while serving in the Pacific. Returning to the states at the end of the war, Jack met Agnes Marie "Mary" McHugh on a TWA flight home. Several months later, the two were engaged and married on June 21, 1947. Fifty-seven years later, Mary, the love of his life, passed away from lung cancer at their home in Friendly Valley, CA.

Jack and Mary settled into married life in Chicago, IL until Jack was recalled into the Navy in 1953. Jack and Mary moved to Pensacola, FL with their two children, John D. and Mary Anne, and Jack became a flight instructor for the next two years. Upon leaving the Navy for civilian life, Jack became a salesman at Armstrong Paint and Varnish Company in Chicago where he rose to Vice-President of the company until leaving in 1971 to follow his dreams of becoming a manufacturer's agent in Woodland Hills, CA. He had the ultimate gift of working with his brother, Ed McKeon, at Almet, a patio furniture company. Jack represented several companies besides Almet including the Dukane barbeque line. Jack retired at the age of 70 in 1993 and he and Mary moved to Friendly Valley Retirement Community in 2000 where he lived until 2005, a year after Mary's passing.

In 2005 Jack became a resident of the Summerhill Villa Senior Community in Newhall, CA where he lived for the next 8 years. Jack married another resident at Summerhill in 2006 (Jill D. Irwin). Two years later Jill passed away from advanced Alzheimer's disease.

Jack is survived by his daughter, Mary Anne McKeon Post (Don); his son, John D. McKeon (Nancy); nephew, Dan McKeon (Ruth); and nieces, Jeannie McKeon Amador (Joe), and Maureen McKeon Ramirez; along with several great-nieces and -nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Elizabeth (Reardon) McKeon; his wife of 57 years, Agnes Marie "Mary"; his brother, Edward L. "Ed" McKeon; sister-in-law, Jeanne McKeon; his nephew, Ed J. McKeon; and second wife, Jill D. Irwin.

Memorial services were held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Thursday, December 5, 2013 with internment at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, Santa Clarita, CA.

In Jack's memory, the family asks that donations be made to which was of Jack and Mary's (https://www.stjude.org/donate).

The family wishes to thank the staff and caregivers at Summerhill Villas in Newhall, CA and the staff and caregivers at Home Instead Senior Care for their kindnesses each and every day of Jack's last years, months, and days.
