Del was one of the most considerate people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. His involvement, although small, in my life has left a lasting impression on me and I will miss him dearly.

When I was still in high school I played water polo. One day as I was collecting bracket money (I helped my mom run brackets and sidepots every week) on Mondays, I happened to mention being tired from practicing and Del mentioned that he used to swim competitively and offered to come out to one of my games. The day that ended up working best for him turned out to be about 50 degrees and rainy in the middle of January, but he still came out to support me!

Also on Monday nights, I would take a large order to Starbucks and Del was a frequent customer. He didn't usually want much, a tall drip coffee (grande or venti if it was getting towards April 15th). Since the coffee itself at Starbucks costs almost nothing, I would occasionally try to refuse the money. Del would not only make sure I took the money, he would always tip me very well. I would always respond with "You know, you really don't have to do that, I'm going over there anyway." He would always respond with something along the lines of "I know I don't have to...and if I didn't want to, I wouldn't. Thanks for getting my coffee." with one of those smiles that he was famous for.

Another thing I'm going to miss about Del is his trail mix. Every so often (I assume it was probably coordinated with his various outdoor excursions), he would bring a small (1 cup) ziploc container full of nuts and seeds and other deliciousness. It doesn't seem like much, but whenever I see one of those containers, I'll certainly think of Del.

I was a sales person & cold called Del's office back in 1999 after I first moved here. It was THE BEST decision I ever made!! This was no normal "accountant's" office. Here was a funny man, who loved to make jokes; he teased me each tax year by asking if I had given birth to another liter of kids the previous year. I am a mother of twins and trips. I'm going to miss all those jokes, that smile and those laughs. You made filing taxes not such a pain!!

Mark and I will miss you, Del. Rest in Peace.

Cheryl,

Thanks for reminding me about the email quotes. Del called far more often than he wrote, but I've gone back and reread each and every one.

Del mentored me as well, and could cut through the clutter of a league meeting like no other. I could suggest something, and only hear crickets chirping in response, but as soon as Del said it, it was fact and would be quickly pass.

He was like an uncle to our kids--both coming to watch my son play water polo in the cold and the rain, and buying reams of gift wrap from my daughter each year--only to check back to make sure she was the top seller. He told the story of how he never wrapped two gifts in the same paper, and then he'd leave the paper with his relatives only to buy more the next year. I always thought it must have made for one heck of a festive tree.

I'll miss having my husband on call for the month of March and April--in case Del worked late and needed a sub on one of the other nights Del bowled. I always got the feeling he was checking with me if it was ok before he asked. I would have let Mario bowl every night if it gave Del a little peace of mind considering how much peace he'd given us over the years.

Del, you are definitely one of a kind, and while we'll all have to figure out how to muddle through, it will not be the same without you.

One of the nicest guys I've ever met at a bowling center, never had a bad thing to say about anyone. And a true sportsman.
He'll be missed...

I worked for Del for over 14 years and not only was he my boss, he was my friend and my mentor. I will miss Del's advice, his guidance, his bright smile, his infectious laugh and his generous heart. At the end of each and every email Del sent, he would have a quote from someone throughout history that was handpicked by him at the time. I will miss his quotes, as they were just a small part of Del's insight and made me really think about the meaning of that quote. So in honor of Del, I have found a quote I would like to share. “Work and live to serve others, leave the world a little better than you found it and garner for yourself as much peace of mind as you can. This is happiness. David Sarnoff (1891-1971); Founder of NBC.

Thank you Del for all the knowledge you have shared with me, the patients when I was struggling, the understanding when mistakes were made, allowing Suzi and I to vent through silliness and crazy antics and always being there to silently reassure that it will all get done in time. I will miss you and your gracious soul. Thank you for enriching my life and the lives of my family.
