Marcy Peek Baker Obituary

1972 – 2016

Marcy Evette Peek Baker, age 44, of Santa Clarita, CA, departed this life on Tuesday, March 9, 2016. She was born in 1972 in Tennessee. Marcy was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Knoxville, TN at an early age and graduated from Farragut High School in 1989 where she was active in student government and the dance team.

She received her B.A. degree in 1993 from Yale University and her law degree from Harvard University in 1997 where she served on the Board of Editors for the 1996-97 edition of the Harvard Law Review. After graduation Marcy clerked for The Honorable Michael Hawkins, Senior Judge of the U.S. State Court of Appeals, 9th Circuit, Phoenix, AZ before working for the law firm of Cravath, Swaine and Moore in New York City. Marcy taught at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, Whittier Law School, and St. Louis University School of Law, before starting her own private practice in Los Angeles, CA.

Five years ago Marcy met the love of her life, Jeff Baker. In 2014 they were married and would have celebrated their second anniversary on March 21. Marcy was an active member of the Kiwanis Club, was currently serving as Treasurer for the Yale Alumni Class of 1993, and was a member of the Harvard Women's Alliance.

She leaves to mourn her passing and to celebrate her life: her husband Jeff Baker, mother Venice L. Peek, brother Marvin E. Peek, Jr., sister Dr. Monica E. Peek Taylor (Ian), God sister Marcella Rodgers (Kacy), stepmother Shirley Peek, mother-in-law Irene Rubin and dear friend "Mommy (Cynthia) Faust"; uncles Dr. Aubrey Long (Cheryl), George Peek, Sr. (Bella), David Peek (Nancy), Carl Calhoun (Elease), Robert Calhoun (Annette); aunt Christine Long Davis (James); first cousins Dr. Tara Long (Randy), David Long (Vanessa), Aubrey Long, Ashawn Long (Shawna), Aleia Long Padilla (Carlos), George Peek, III (Barbara), Michael Peek, Angela Peek (Brett) and special cousin Mary A. Freeney; nieces Faryn Peek, Olivia Peek, Zora Peek-Taylor, Danella Bertram; nephew Ezra Peek-Taylor; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father Marvin E. Peek, Sr. (Aug 2015), nephew Ty'Shawn Spears (Sept 2015), uncle Jeffrey Peek (Nov 2015), grandfather George Peek, Sr. and grandmother Mae R. Long.

The Rev. Robert K. Gieselmann will officiate at the memorial service for Marcy Peek Baker at 3:00pm on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at The Episcopal Church of Ascension, 800 Northshore Drive, Knoxville, TN 37919. A reception will immediately follow the service in the church parish hall. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider making a donation in her name to the Kiwanis Club of Burbank, c/o David Harris, 2106 Hilton Drive, Burbank, CA 91504 (www.burbankkiwanis.org/).

I knew Marcy in high school: we graduated together: '89. We were friends and competitive for college.
She remembered me, when I went to college, at Boston, near where she was. I had basically dropped out of the college campus, then, though still a student. She had encouraging words for me then, which meant a lot. I'll miss you Marcy. It's too early. We were very close in high school.
