RICHMOND, Va. — John A. O'Donnell Jr., 73, of Richmond, Va., and formerly of Nanticoke and Muhlenburg, passed away Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at St. Mary's Hospital, Richmond.
He was a son of the late John A. and Winifred Patterson Prudhoe O'Donnell. He was raised in Muhlenburg and graduated from Northwest Area High School, class of 1958. Early in life, he managed Woolworths stores in Philadelphia and Atlantic City, N.J., and later Woolco stores in Wildwood, N.J., and Charlotte, N.C. Relocating to Richmond in the late 1960s, he retired from MCV Hospitals in 1995 and Bon Secours Health System on Jan. 13, 2013.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister, Gwenneth Prudhoe Bonham; her infant son, Dwight; and her husband, the Rev. Thomas Bonham; and sister Doreen Prudhoe Sorber and her husband, Jim Sorber.
Surviving are his sister Elizabeth "Betty" Swithers and her husband, Melvin, Nanticoke; his partner, Phillip Jones Jr., Richmond; nieces, Barbara Sorber, Deborah Atherton (Charles), Christine Martin (the Rev. Neil), Ellen Smith (Jeffrey); a nephew, David Swithers (Denise); great-nieces and great-nephews; and two great-great-nephews.
Funeral will be held at noon Thursday from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke, with the Rev. Neil Martin officiating. Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service.
