NANTICOKE — Sylvia M. Tomczak, 88, of Nanticoke, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept. 10, 2018. She was surrounded by her loving family and lots of prayers.

Born March 27, 1930, in Glen Lyon, Sylvia was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Martha Kornowski Furmanski.

Sylvia was employed for over 20 years as a secretary for Luzerne County Community College.

Sylvia was a woman of strong faith and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Nicholas Church, Wilkes-Barre, where in her earlier years, she taught catechism. She also attended St. Monica Parish in West Wyoming.

She served faithfully for many years as a service team member for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and as chairperson for word gifts for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Conference at the University of Scranton.

In addition to her parents, Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Tomczak, and infant son, Brian.

Surviving are her children, Marthann Elmir, of Kingston, Sylvia Kozlofski and her husband, Jeffrey, of Nanticoke, Roberta Kuranovich and her husband, Joseph, of Wilkes-Barre, Richard Tomczak and his wife, Amy, of Nanticoke, and twins, the Rev. Peter Tomczak, of West Wyoming, and Allison Reilly and her husband, John, of Glen Lyon; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; her brother, Adalbert Furmanski, of Fort Pierce, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and her precious cat, Lily.

Relatives and friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Bednarski Funeral Home, 168 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Monica Parish, with her son, the Rev. Peter Tomczak, officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Wanamie.

Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church Friday morning.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Wilkes-Barre Association for the Blind, 1825 Wyoming Ave., Exeter, PA 18643, or to the Diocese of Scranton Annual Appeal, 300 Wyoming Ave., Scranton, PA 18503-1279.
