CLARKS SUMMIT — John P. Flannery, 65, of Clarks Summit, died Thursday evening, March 20, 2014, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer at Regional Hospital of Scranton. He was the husband of the former Linda Ghigiarelli. The couple had been married for 37 years.

Born in Newark, N.J., he was a son of the late Curtis and Mary Pohorilak Flannery. He was a graduate of Essex County Catholic High School, Newark, and received his bachelor's degree in engineering from Newark College of Engineering.

John retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, where he had been employed as a civil engineer for more than 35 years. Most recently he was employed by the Baker Construction in Harrisburg.

John was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Old Forge, American Society of Highway Engineers, and the PennDOT 25-year club. He was also a member of the Church of St. Gregory, Clarks Green.

He was a loving husband, father and friend. He loved spending time with his family and friends, especially traveling with his wife, Linda. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

The family thanks Dr. Martin Hyzinski and staff and the eighth floor nurses at Regional Hospital of Scranton for their exceptional care. They also thank neighbors, friends and co-workers, and especially Paul and Betty Ubaldini for their tremendous help and support.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles.

Also surviving are two daughters, Erin Seely and her husband, Fred, Newtown Sqware, and Bridget Flannery, Binghamton, N.Y.; a son, Christopher Flannery, Roanoke, Va.; a sister, Patricia Flannery, New Jersey; a nephew, Charles George Flannery, Boston; and two beloved bichons, Ava and Zsa Zsa.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held from the Church of St. Gregory, 330 N. Abington Road, Clarks Green, with services by the Rev. John Lapera, pastor. Interment took place in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church of St. Gregory.
