LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 10, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. at Progressive Baptist Church for Janis Heather Scranton Welcome, 78, who passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Lafayette General Medical Center.

Services will be conducted by Rev. Lloyd Joiner, Jr.

Entombment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.

Janis Heather Scranton Welcome was born March 8, 1935 in Jennings, Louisiana. Her walk with God began at an early age at Union Baptist Church in Jennings, Louisiana, under the leadership of Pastor G.C. Chaney. Janis was a 1953 graduate of Jeff Davis High School and a 1957 graduate of Grambling State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. During this time, she was united in holy matrimony to Preston Welcome on May 3, 1956, and was later blessed by God with a beautiful baby girl, Tiffany Dawn. She retired from the Lafayette Parish School System after having touched one life at a time over a thirty year span.

Janis served faithfully at Progressive Baptist Church in numerous capacities including the Deaconess Ministry, Sanctuary Choir, Circle of Wisdom, Deborah Circle, After-school Tutorial Program and Sunday School Teacher.

Janis Welcome leaves us with wholesome and fond memories of resounding compassion, jovial conversation, gentle demeanor and a sense of humility for all mankind. She will forever be cherished by her loving and devoted husband, Preston Welcome, Jr.; daughter, Tiffany Dawn (Daniel)Bunch; grandson, Daniel Bunch, Jr. and granddaughter, Sydney Grace all of Frisco, TX; one sister-in-law, Audrey W. (Verge, Sr.) Ausberry of New Iberia, LA; one brother-in-law, Adam J. (Barbara) Welcome, Sr. of New Iberia, LA; one niece, Terri Castille of Houston, TX; four nephews, Gary (Alicia) Castille of Houston, TX, Verge (Cheri) Ausberry, Jr., Shawn Paul Welcome, both of Baton Rouge, LA and Adam (Melissa) Welcome, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL; a special cousin, Julia Thibodeaux; her extended family, Bobby and Barbara McCarty of Lafayette, LA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She joins in glory, her father and mother, Walter and Nebraska Lawdins Scranton along with her sister, Hulda Scranton (John) Castille and niece, Ina Nicole Castille.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 10, 2014 at Progressive Baptist Church from 8:00 a.m. until funeral services begin at Noon.
