JoAnn Underwood Caldwell
LAFAYETTE - A Celebration of Life for JoAnn Underwood Caldwell, age 93, will be held at a later date at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Ft. Scott, KS, where her cremains will be interred. She died on Monday, March 31, 2014 at Cornerstone Village South, Lafayette, Louisiana, where she resided eight years. The family will conduct the graveside service.
JoAnn was born February 15, 1921 in Garland, Kansas, to Harvey and May Conner Underwood. She and her four siblings were raised on a farm with no running water and no electricity until a much later date. Her mother had contracted polio at age three and walked with crutches. She never complained and was grateful for what she could do. JoAnn was the same-always upbeat and happy for what she had, and in Depression era days, the family had very little.
Upon graduation from Ft. Scott, KS High School and Ft. Scott Junior College, she taught all eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse during World War II
while husband Luther trained with the U.S. Army at Camp Polk, LA, then served in the European Theatre. Luther's cremains will be interred with JoAnn's and a celebratory service will be held for him as well.
After the war, JoAnn and family moved to Kansas City, MO, where she continued her education, earning a bachelor and master's degrees in education from the University of Central Missouri. She taught elementary school 36 years.
JoAnn is survived by three sons, Larry Caldwell, Lafayette, CO; Dr. Joe Caldwell and wife Roselyn, Lafayette, LA; Lynn Caldwell and wife Marjorie, St. Louis, MO; a brother, Eldon Underwood, Garland, KS; five grandchildren, Jason Caldwell and wife Bobbi, Lafayette; Lesley Caldwell Cobb and husband Tyler, Austin, TX; Sonnet Caldwell Grant, Kailua, HI: Hagan Caldwell, Boulder, CO; and Chris Caldwell and wife Sarah, Arlington, VA; two great granddaughters, Adleigh and Reagan Caldwell, Lafayette, LA; and much loved nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Luther, two brothers, Carl and Clair Underwood, and a sister, Mary Esther Ham.
JoAnn and Luther loved traveling to various bluegrass music venues and held membership in the Kansas City Area Bluegrass Association. She also was a member of Raytown Retired Teacher's Association and Missouri Retired Teacher's Association.
