Mary "Mai" Louise Abington
MANY - Mary "Mai" Louise Abington, 83, of Baton Rouge LA, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2013 at Kinder Retirement and Nursing Home in Kinder, Louisiana.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 12, 2013 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Many, LA.
Father Joe Martina of St. John the Baptist will be officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 from 6:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. at Warren Meadows Funeral Home, and Thursday from 8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m.
Burial will follow the funeral at Many Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Warren Meadows Funeral Home.
Mai was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on October 30, 1929.
She graduated from high school at St. Vincent's Academy, Shreveport, LA and graduated with honors as "salutatorian" of her class. She continued her education at Northwestern State University, in Natchitoches, LA, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, English and a minor in Speech. While in college, she received many other honors; she was a member of Alpha Psi Omega Dramatic Fraternity, a member of Delta Zeta sorority, selected as "sweetheart" for Lambda Zeta Fraternity, and she was also selected as a "Potpourri Beauty," and a member of the Potpourri College yearbook staff.
Mai was married to Douglas Crews Abington on January 21, 1951 and was married for 29 years.
Mai worked as a writer for the Catholic Commentator for 10 years and retired from the State of Louisiana as the Director of the State Register. She loved writing, reading, friends, her children, grandchildren and great grandchild.
She was also actively involved in St. George Parish in Baton Rouge Louisiana working with RCIA and other ministries.
Mai is survived by her four children, Elizabeth Abington Prejean, Camille Abington Hansen, Stephen D. Abington, and Rodney C. Abington, and one great grandchild, Brynn Jolie Harrington; four grandchildren, Jake Harrington, Samuel Abington, Gavin Abington, and Nicolas Abington;
Her nieces and nephews, Stephen Levee, Ross Levee, Sally Price, Mark
Sutton, Ellen S. Donaldson, Clay Abington, Julie Abington Brewton, and Valerie Abington, Doug Abington and many other family and friends.
Mai is preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Crews Abington, and her parents, Lionel Cardoza Levee, and Gertrude Holtzclaw Levee, her brothers, Stephen Levee, J. B Levee, and Ned Levee, and one sister, Margaret Place Levee.
The family of Mary "Mai" Louise Abington wishes to thank the Kinder Nursing Home for their kind care of their mother in her final days. They also want to thank Vicki Ludwig, her caretaker in San Mateo, CA where she resided for the past nine years.
