CROWLEY - Mary Alice Wynn Freeland, aged 98, passed on to Glory on December 26, 2012, at the American Legion Hospital in Crowley.
Services to celebrate her life will be at First Presbyterian Church of Crowley at 11:00 on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013. The family may be visited at the church for two hours prior to the service.
Mary Alice Wynn Freeland was born on November 21, 1914, in Crowley, Louisiana, to Joseph William Wynn and Sallie Seward Hollingsworth Wynn. She grew up in Rayne and Crowley, Louisiana, graduating from Crowley High School. After high school she attended college at Southwestern Louisiana Institute which is now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She taught elementary school in Mermentau, South Rayne, and South Crowley. She married Charles Johnston Freeland, Jr. on June 15, 1939. She was the mother of Charles Johnston Freeland III, Thomas Barton Freeland, and Joseph Wynn Freeland. She was also "Mother" to Sari Duvekot VanHeemskerck of the Netherlands, the first international exchange student at Crowley High School.
Mary Alice devoted herself to the raising of her family. She taught Sunday school in the Methodist and then the Presbyterian churches from age twelve through her late eighties. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Crowley. She enjoyed traveling when she could, and traveled to many parts of the world. She was a member of the Three-Ten Club, the Descendants of Valentine Hollingsworth, Sr. Society, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
As a result of her efforts raising her family, all of her children received their college degrees and have excelled in their professions, including Sari VanHeemskerck, who became a member of the Dutch Parliament. Her home was always open and became the gathering center for family and friends alike for over sixty years.
Mary Alice Wynn Freeland is preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Sally Wynn, her husband, Charles Johnston Freeland, Jr. and her sisters, Sally Averill Wynn Stanton, Francis Brownlee Wynn Wright, and Caroline Hollingsworth Wynn Jenkins. She is survived by her children, Charles and Sandy Freeland, III, Thomas and Mary Freeland, Joseph and Charlotte Freeland, and Sari and Chris VanHeemskerck, seven grand children: Charles Freeland, IV, Mary Kay Freeland Cook, Thomas Barton Freeland Jr., Noelle Freeland, William Freeland, Fran Freeland Yanity, and Clint Freeland, and also, Lars VanHeemskerck-Pillis as well as ten great-grandchildren.
