Shelby Samuel Mier
LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial in Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist for Shelby Samuel Mire, 84, who died on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at Louisiana Extended Care Hospital in Lafayette.
Interment will be in St. John Cemetery in Lafayette.
Reverend Chester Arceneaux, Rector of Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services.
He leaves to cherish his memory one brother, James Powell; one sister-in-law, Carrie Thibodeaux Finley; four nieces, Lori P. Decker, Alice Thibodeaux Grant, Sue Finley Miller and Joan Finley; and four nephews, Jack Finley, Allen Thibodeaux, Greg Thibodeaux and Brian Powell.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty T. Mier; by his mother Gladys Mier Powell; and his step-father, James Kelley Powell.
Shelby Samuel Mier was born on July 30, 1929 in New Orleans, Louisiana and was a resident of Lafayette for most of his life. He was a graduate of Lafayette High School and attended SLI (now ULL) for two years until his enlistment in the United States Air Force
in 1948. He was a veteran of military service and proudly served his country as a SSG in the United States Air Force. Mr. Mier worked for IBM for over 25 years until his retirement. He was a parishioner and volunteer at Cathedral of St. John for many years and received the St. John Medal for outstanding volunteer work. Mr. Mier was instrumental in mapping the Cathedral Cemetery and had a passion for being active in the church. He was a loving husband, brother, uncle and friend to all and will be dearly missed.
Pallbearers will be Gregory Thibodeaux, Jim Powell, Brian Powell, Larry Miller, Trey Decker and Stephen Miller. Honorary pallbearers will be David Stone, Daniel Stone, Cayce Stone, Joe Mayard and Don Breaux.
A Rosary will be recited by Brady LeBlanc on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 6:30 PM In Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN Location.
The family requests that visitation be observed on Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and will continue on Saturday from 8:00 AM until time of services.
