Lafayette - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014, 11:00 AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church for Terry James Godfrey, 53. He will be buried in Calvary Cemetery. Fr. Thomas James, SVD will celebrate the mass.

The angels came on Wednesday afternoon, May 28, 2014 in Lafayette, Louisiana to call home Terry James Godfrey. Terry was born on October 1, 1960 in Lafayette, LA to his loving parents, Theresa and the late Lee Godfrey. He attended Ovey Comeaux High School where he excelled in basketball. Upon graduation in May 1978 he began his collegiate career at his beloved Southern University and joined a service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega. After joining and relishing in Jaguar Nation for two years, he transferred to University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL) to continue his studies, majoring in Education. Although Terry did not have any biological children of his own, he was a father figure to thousands of children in the Lafayette community and across this country.

At the time of his death, Terry was a member of the Knights of Peter Claver Council #76 where he served as Past Deputy Grand Knight and Past Junior Knight Commander. He was a Lector and Eucharistic Minister at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Terry also served as the Past Chaplain of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Association. He was a faithful member of the Men Among Men Social Club.

Left to cherish his memories are his mother and best friend, Theresa Godfrey; five siblings: Yvonne Wilkins (Ransome, Sr.), Sheryl Polite (Minister Larry), Edward Godfrey (Mary), Catherine Francois (Steve), and Master Sergeant Donna Godfrey (Robert Frazier); five nieces and four nephews, two great-nieces, one great-nephew, three godchildren, and a host of uncles, aunts, relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, Lee Godfrey; his paternal grandparents, Leonce and Hattie Godfrey; and his maternal grandparents, Sidney and Oudia Huntsberry.

Viewing will be Friday, June 6, 2014, 5:00-9:00 PM at Kinchen Funeral Home and resume on Saturday, June 7, 2014, 8:00 AM until the time of service at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
