Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with full military honors.
Eugene Joseph Sonnier, III was born on June 7, 1994 to Norlet Taylor Pierre and Eugene Joseph Sonnier, II. He was affectionately called "Trey" by his family and close friends.
He was born in Lafayette, Louisiana and was actively serving in the United States Air Force at McGuire Air Force base in New Jersey. He was an Airman First Class and Crew Chief of a C-17 aircraft. He was employed by Stine prior to his commitment of active military duty.
He attended Immaculate Heart of Mary School from Pre-Kindergarten to 6thgrade. He also attended Lafayette Christian Academy from 7th grade to 12th grade and graduated in 2012. While attending LCA, he played football, basketball, track and baseball. His favorite sport was football in which he was a wide receiver and linebacker, #31. He was awarded All-State linebacker in 2009, All-State wide receiver in 2010, Defensive Player of the Year in 2011, and the hardest worker for varsity football in 2012. He was also a member of the Yearbook Committee, which allowed him to capture special moments through his love of photography. He was a boy scout for 9 years and was ranked as a Star. He participated in many camping trips and outdoor activities with his mother and beloved grandfather Eugene J. Sonnier Sr. He also loved the many fishing trips shared with his father.
Eugene left Louisiana for Basic Military Training on January 21, 2013. He graduated from training on March 22, 2013 at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Because of his exceptional performance while at Basic Military Training he was selected to be the Guidon Bearer which was a significant honor that he was proud of. After leaving Basic Military Training he left for Technical Training in Wichita Falls, Texas where he continued his education in Aircraft Maintenance. His Technical Training continued in Charleston, South Carolina until he moved to his permanent station in Trenton, New Jersey at McGuire Air Force Base. On October 18, 2013, just days before his passing, he was assigned his C-17 aircraft of which he was the Crew Chief.
He had a contagious smile that would light up any room. He was soft spoken and a person of few words but for whatever reason - said so much. He loved his family and had a strong unwavering belief in his faith and God. He always offered hugs that were soft with gentle pats on the back. Eugene loved his family and was proud of his Louisiana roots. He was genuine and always there to help anyone in need. He had a witty sense of humor and was full of "did you know facts". He had a very curious nature even as a young child. He was very explorative and curious about the world he lived in. Traveling, sight-seeing and "getting lost" or "making a wrong turn on purpose" was his passion. He always loved any mode of transportation- automobiles, trains, planes and motorcycles- anything that would lead to a new adventure. He loved to sing and was passionate about music, art, and photography.
Now left to embrace the memories of Eugene are his mother, Norlet Taylor Pierre (Titus) of Lafayette; his father Eugene J. Sonnier II (Stephanie P. Clanton) of New Iberia; his sisters, Krystal T. Downs (Wayne) and Taylor J. Sonnier, both of Lafayette; paternal grandmother Claudette B. Sonnier of New Iberia; maternal grandfather Norris J.
