LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at a 1:00 PM Mass of Resurrection in the Chapel of Bethany Health Care Center in Lafayette, LA. for Sister Bernardine Breaux, MHS, the former Mary Vivian Breaux, who died on Monday, May 6, 2013 at Lafayette General Medical Center at the age of 98. Reverend Thomas Finley of St. Genevieve Catholic Church in Lafayette will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services.

Mary was the daughter of the late Felix Joseph Breaux and Agnes Sevin Breaux and was born on March 1, 1915 in Gretna, LA. She attended St. Joseph Elementary School in Gretna and Belleville High School in Algiers. She received a BA in Education from SLI (presently ULL) in Lafayette, LA.

Entering the Sisters of the Most Holy Sacrament in 1930, she professed her vows in 1936. Sister Bernardine spent 60 years in Education Ministry as a principal and as a middle school, primary school and kindergarten teacher and in later years as a teacher's aide. Her ministry brought her to schools in Louisiana including St. Joseph in Gretna, LA; St. Michael's in Crowley; Sacred Heart in Pineville; St. Theresa of Avila in Gonzales; MHS Kindergarten and Our Lady of Fatima in Lafayette; Annunciation Grammar School, Our Lady Star of the Sea and St. Maurice in New Orleans; in Mississippi at Our Lady of Victories and Sacred Heart in Pascagoula and Blessed Sacrament School in Birmingham, AL. Upon retiring from the classroom she served in Ministry to the elderly at Our Lady of Victories Parish in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

Sister Bernardine was a prolific correspondent who kept in touch with families, former pupils as well as her numerous relatives and friends. She will always be remembered for her joyful spirit and her kindness and generosity to everyone she met.

Sister came from a large family and is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Felix and Agnes Sevin Breaux; five sisters, Ella Hebert, Eunice Lanata, Dorothy McKernan, Agnes Buckley and Lucy Boudro; and five brothers, Hubert, Hayes, Alvin, Felix Jr. (Joe) and Sidney Breaux.

Visitation for Sister Bernardine will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 9:00 AM until Mass time at the Chapel of Bethany Health Care Center, with a Rosary Service at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery in Lafayette.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sister Bernardine's name to the Sisters of the Most Holy Sacrament, P.O. Box 90037, Lafayette, LA. 70509-0037
